Apple Delays Its Smart Home Hub

Reports indicate that Apple is delaying the launch of its new smart home hub because the company needs more time to improve the software for its AI, Siri. Some users and experts have criticized Apple for falling behind in its AI strategy — but is this truly a problem? Rather, should Apple's approach of taking its time to develop AI that genuinely serves consumers be seen as commendable? This article explores the topic of AI and Apple.

Problems with AI Marketing in the Consumer Tech Industry

In recent years, product after product incorporating AI has come to market in the consumer technology space. Yet in many cases, these products launch with incomplete features while marketing them as if they possess magical, superior AI capabilities.

Amazon's Alexa and Other Misleading Examples

For example, Amazon recently announced an AI chatbot integrated with "Alexa" that was advertised as being able to book an Uber to pick up a friend. In practice, however, critical details such as the pickup location and driver information were missing. Google, too, presented unreliable answers — suggesting, for instance, that glue be added to pizza recipes.

These companies may be rushing unfinished AI to market in an effort to meet consumer expectations. But is that truly valuable to consumers?

Apple, by contrast, has decided to delay the launch of its new smart home hub — in order to improve Siri's software. Because Siri handles users' personal information, providing incorrect information is simply not acceptable.

Apple's "Personal Siri" in Development

At WWDC, Apple announced that it is developing a "Personal Siri" capable of understanding cross-app context and making relevant suggestions to users. This feature is planned to roll out gradually through iOS 18 updates, but has not yet reached completion.

Rather than launching a smart home hub with incomplete features, Apple's choice to spend more time improving Siri represents a genuinely valuable decision for consumers.

Apple is not only working on Siri improvements — it is also developing innovative products that combine AI with robotics. Company researchers are, for example, working on products that blend robotics and AI, such as lamps that change their expressions in response to voice commands.

Beyond Demonstrations

These efforts are not mere demonstrations of AI — they are aimed at real innovation in the fullest sense, enriching consumers' daily lives. Apple views AI as a tool for extending human capabilities, and is advancing its development carefully and steadily.

Some have pointed to Apple's smart home hub delay as evidence of lagging AI strategy. But in order to provide AI that truly serves consumers, is it not necessary to develop it at a measured pace?

The current consumer tech landscape is flooded with products featuring incomplete AI. But these products do not meet consumer expectations. Apple, by investing time in improving Siri, is attempting to provide users with a truly reliable AI assistant.

Innovative Products Combining Robotics and AI

Apple is also working on the development of innovative products that combine robotics and AI. These efforts are likely to lead to genuine innovation that enriches consumers' lives.

Apple's cautious AI development posture may become a target of criticism in the short term. But from a long-term perspective, is it not in fact the wise choice for delivering AI that truly serves consumers?

China-Related Transactions Export-Control Screening Sheet (fill-in / Export Control Law & Dual-Use Regulations, critical minerals, Control List, 2026)

A fill-in working sheet for companies trading with China: screen a single transaction against China's export-control regime (the Export Control Law and the Dual-Use Items Export Control Regulations), the controls on critical minerals (gallium/germanium/graphite/antimony/tungsten etc./rare earths/helium), and the four counterparty-list systems (Control List, Watch List, Unreliable Entity List, countermeasure lists). A procedure for "what to check before the deal," not a roster of "who is listed." With a plain-language intro, based on MOFCOM announcements. Listing is a regulatory category, not a judgment about any company (including the Japanese firms on the Japan-directed lists); controls change continually, so verify current announcements and consult your officer. Match counterparties using the original simplified-Chinese wording.
