Nintendo Switch launched in 2017 and reshaped the gaming industry with its hybrid concept. Now, Nintendo Switch 2 takes that foundation further with magnetic Joy-Con 2, a dedicated C-button for Game Chat, 7.9-inch 1080p 120Hz HDR display, 4K dock output, 256GB storage, and Game Share — one game copy usable across multiple systems. Release date: June 5, 2025.

Since launching in 2017, Nintendo Switch transformed the gaming market by doing something no previous console had managed: working equally well as a home console and a portable device. That hybrid concept spread to nearly every corner of gaming culture, and its commercial success was remarkable.

Nintendo Switch 2 is the follow-up, and it doesn't simply turn up the specs. The hardware introduces meaningful new features — Joy-Con 2 with a dedicated Game Chat button, a substantially larger and sharper display, Game Share for local multiplayer from a single game copy, a dock with 4K output, and 256GB of built-in storage. Release date: June 5, 2025.

This article covers everything announced so far, organized around four areas:

  • Joy-Con 2 and Game Chat
  • Game Share and display / hardware specs
  • Dock, compatibility, Pro Controller, and storage

Joy-Con 2 and Game Chat

The redesigned Joy-Con 2 is more than an iterative upgrade. Several changes address persistent complaints about the original.

The C-Button The most distinctive addition is the C-button on the right Joy-Con 2. Pressing it instantly opens Game Chat — Nintendo's built-in voice and video communication system. There's no separate app to open, no phone required. This is the most direct acknowledgment yet that Nintendo understands online communication is as important as the games themselves.

Magnetic attachment Joy-Con 2 attaches to the console magnetically rather than sliding into a rail. A release button on the back allows clean detachment. The magnetic system provides more secure seating in handheld mode and eliminates the occasional alignment issues of the original rail design.

Larger SL/SR buttons and sticks The SL and SR buttons — used when the Joy-Con is held horizontally in "おすそわけ" (shared) play — are noticeably larger. The analog sticks are also bigger, improving precision for titles that demand fine control.

Mouse control Both Joy-Con 2 units can function as mice in compatible games. This is more sophisticated than Wii pointer control — closer to a direct analog for mouse-and-keyboard input on specific genres, particularly strategy or point-and-click titles.

Game Chat Game Chat uses the Switch 2's built-in microphone — designed to pick up voices from a reasonable distance without requiring a headset. Noise cancellation is included. Critically, Game Chat works across different games: you can be in an active chat with a friend who's playing something else entirely, making it more of a social layer than a game-specific feature.

An optional Nintendo Switch 2 Camera (sold separately, available at launch) adds video chat, showing your face overlaid on the game screen. Automatic voice-to-text transcription and text-to-speech output are built in for accessibility.

Game Share, Display, and Hardware Specs

Game Share Game Share enables local multiplayer from a single game copy. One Switch 2 owner with a compatible game can invite up to three other players — and those players can be on original Nintendo Switch hardware, not just Switch 2. This removes a significant barrier to group play: no longer does everyone need to own the same title.

The feature is limited to compatible titles. Nintendo has confirmed that Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition will receive a free Game Share update as an early example, signaling an intent to expand the catalog.

Display The new display is 7.9 inches — up from 6.2 inches on the original Switch. Resolution increases from 720p to 1080p (1920×1080). The panel runs at up to 120Hz and supports HDR10.

The panel type is LCD, not OLED. This is the most notable absence: OLED would improve black levels and contrast, but Nintendo chose LCD for the base model. The improvements in size, resolution, refresh rate, and HDR still represent a significant step up in portable display quality.

Audio The internal speakers are tuned for better audio balance across frequencies — cleaner and more natural sound in handheld and tabletop modes. 3D audio is supported without requiring a dedicated surround system. The built-in microphone is positioned for Game Chat use, with noise cancellation.

Build and ergonomics The body width is approximately 10.4 inches (with Joy-Con attached), up from roughly 9.4 inches. Thickness is maintained at 13.9mm. The kickstand is now full-width and free-angle — similar in design to Microsoft Surface stands — replacing the narrow, limited kickstand on the original model. Two USB-C ports are available: one on the bottom, one on the top, useful for charging in tabletop mode or connecting accessories.

Nintendo Switch 2 Specs Summary

Feature Spec
Display 7.9-inch LCD, 1080p, 120Hz, HDR10
Joy-Con 2 C-button (Game Chat), magnetic attachment, mouse control, larger SL/SR/sticks
Built-in mic Yes, noise cancellation
Storage 256GB internal
USB-C ports 2 (top and bottom)
Kickstand Full-width, free-angle
Dock output Up to 4K
Game Share Up to 3 systems per host, original Switch compatible

Dock, Compatibility, Pro Controller, and Storage

Dock with 4K output The Nintendo Switch 2 Dock outputs up to 4K (3840×2160) via HDMI — a major jump from the original dock's 1080p ceiling. HDR output is also supported. A cooling fan is built into the dock to manage the heat load during sustained 4K output. A wired LAN port is included (the original Switch dock required a separate USB adapter for wired connection).

Backward compatibility Nintendo Switch 2 plays existing Nintendo Switch software — both physical cartridges and digital downloads. Game cards use the same form factor as original Switch cards. Existing software libraries transfer to the new hardware.

microSD Express — important caveat Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for storage expansion, a faster standard than the microSD cards used in the original Switch. Existing microSD cards are not compatible with Switch 2. Users with large libraries stored on microSD will need new cards when moving to the new system. With 256GB of built-in storage, this is less urgent than it might otherwise be — but it's a real consideration for anyone planning the transition.

System Transfer (via Nintendo Account login) supports moving save data and purchased digital software from original Switch to Switch 2.

New Pro Controller The new Pro Controller includes the C-button for Game Chat, two new rear buttons (GL and GR) that can be mapped to existing button inputs, and an audio jack — enabling direct connection of wired headsets, which the original Pro Controller didn't support.

Release date June 5, 2025.

Summary

Nintendo Switch 2 advances the hybrid console concept in hardware and adds meaningfully new features.

On the hardware side: a larger, sharper, faster display; magnetic Joy-Con with improved buttons and new mouse control; a dock capable of 4K output; 256GB of storage; and an improved kickstand that makes tabletop mode genuinely stable.

On the features side: Game Chat built directly into the hardware eliminates the need for external apps; Game Share makes local multiplayer accessible without everyone owning the same game; mouse control opens new input possibilities for specific genres.

The tradeoffs worth knowing: the display is LCD not OLED; battery life is shorter despite a larger battery (the more powerful hardware draws more power); and existing microSD cards don't work — new microSD Express cards are required.

For users who play online frequently, want local multiplayer with friends who have mixed hardware, or simply want a better portable display, Switch 2 offers clear upgrades. For users satisfied with the original Switch and playing mostly single-player titles, the decision is less urgent. More information on game performance and real-world battery life will sharpen that picture.
