SXSW Session Report #49: For Those at Risk of Diabetes — The Best Advice for Protecting Your Health
A panel discussion was held on America's approach to diabetes and diabetes prevention. Recent advances in diabetes treatment have improved care for patients, yet the number of people with diabetes continues to rise. Panelists argued that in addition to better treatments, prevention efforts are equally important. Specifically, they emphasized the need to promote healthy eating habits and establish regular exercise routines. They also introduced ongoing efforts to ensure that patients can access prescriptions even while traveling, given that prescription access can be difficult for diabetic patients in some situations. Furthermore, it was stressed that people at risk of diabetes need to become better informed about the condition — through glucose monitoring, dietary adjustments, and similar practices. The overall message was that diabetes is a treatable disease, and that prevention should be taken seriously.
Diabetes poses a major threat to American health, and continued efforts in treatment development and prevention are necessary.
