In 2025, Apple Unveiled a New iPhone Unlike Any Before It
In 2025, Apple unveiled a new iPhone that breaks from its predecessors: the iPhone 16e. This is not simply a budget handset in the tradition of the SE lineup. With the iPhone 16e, Apple is pursuing a new strategic direction.
- iPhone 16e: Modern design and the latest technology
- Camera: The limits of a single lens
- Battery: A surprising strength
- The problem with the iPhone 16e: Pricing
- Who is the iPhone 16e actually for?
iPhone 16e: Modern Design and the Latest Technology
The iPhone 16e is built on the chassis of the iPhone 14. It features flat aluminum sides, USB-C, and IP68 water and dust resistance. The rear has a new single-camera ring, and an Action Button has been added to the left side.
The display is a 6.1-inch panel with a notch and Face ID. Compared to previous SE models, the design is decidedly more contemporary — though the display brightness is a bit underwhelming, and the refresh rate tops out at 60Hz.
The iPhone 16e Comes with Apple's Latest A18 Chip
The iPhone 16e is powered by the A18 chip — though it's a version with one fewer GPU core than the flagship models. That said, performance should be more than adequate for a smartphone in this class.
The camera is a 48-megapixel single lens — the same pixel count as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, but with a smaller sensor and less capable optical image stabilization. As a result, photo quality differs noticeably from the flagship models.
Daytime shots produce adequate sharpness and the signature iPhone color rendering, but image quality drops off quickly as light decreases. The absence of an ultrawide lens also means no Cinematic mode, spatial audio, or macro photography. If camera capability is a priority, step up to a higher model.
Battery life is where the iPhone 16e genuinely surprises. Previous SE models had a weakness here — cramming the latest processor into a compact body meant battery endurance suffered. The iPhone 16e addresses this by using a modern-sized body and a new power-efficient modem, resulting in a meaningful improvement.
After One Week of Use
In a week of personal testing, the iPhone 16e matched the battery life of an iPhone 16 Pro. Wireless charging is slow, but the battery capacity itself is sufficient.
The problem with the iPhone 16e: Pricing
The biggest issue with the iPhone 16e is its price. The direct purchase price comes in at ¥99,800 for 128GB, ¥114,800 for 256GB, and ¥144,800 for 512GB — this is no longer an affordable iPhone. Apple may be using the iPhone 16e as an entry point to nudge users toward more expensive models.
That said, the pricing feels steep given the spec sheet. The lack of MagSafe support and the absence of an ultrawide lens, for instance, feel like omissions that don't fit the price point.
Who Is the iPhone 16e Actually For?
The iPhone 16e may be a reasonable choice for users upgrading from an iPhone 12 or older — they'll gain a modern design, the latest chip, and Apple Intelligence. The pricing feels mismatched with the specifications, though. Buying a used iPhone 15 Pro for a similar price might honestly be the smarter move.
The iPhone 16e is part of a new strategic direction for Apple. Whether its pricing will truly resonate with consumers remains to be seen. Is Apple trying to capture budget-segment users with this model — or is it designed to funnel people toward pricier options? Either way, the iPhone 16e is a product that will be telling for Apple's strategy going forward.
