One Month to Go — Still Time to Prepare Properly

With less than a month remaining in Osaka Expo 2025 (open April through October 2025), the preparation window for a successful visit is still open. This guide covers the three preparation categories that determine whether your day goes smoothly: what to wear, what to bring, and what will be confiscated at the gate.

  • Clothing: what to wear for a full day on your feet
  • The 16 essential items based on visitor experience
  • Prohibited items and how to avoid gate problems

What to Wear

The expo requires continuous walking across a large venue — up to 1.6km between East and West gates — with extended queue waits interspersed. Comfort and mobility determine your physical state by mid-afternoon.

The Recommended Configuration

T-shirt — Breathable, quick-drying material. If sun protection is a concern, a lightweight long-sleeve version works provided it doesn't restrict movement. Function over appearance.

Pants (not a skirt) — The Signature Pavilion null² (Null Null) uses mirrored flooring; a skirt is inappropriate. Pants also allow unrestricted movement during crowd navigation.

Cushioned sneakers — The most important clothing decision. A full day of walking in inadequate footwear creates cumulative fatigue that degrades the entire visit by mid-afternoon. Prioritize cushioning and fit over style.

Compression leggings (under pants) — Supports circulation, reduces swelling and leg fatigue during extended standing and walking. Worn under trousers, they are invisible and effective.

Backpack — A backpack over a shoulder bag or hand-carry for two reasons: both hands remain free (for photography, QR codes, item handling at pavilions), and weight distributes evenly across both shoulders rather than loading one side.

Additional layers

  • Light windbreaker or jacket: Yumeshima is an artificial island exposed to sea breeze; indoor air conditioning in some pavilions is aggressive
  • Hat or sun umbrella: extended outdoor queue exposure
  • Sunglasses: UV protection and visual comfort during outdoor sections

The 16 Essential Items

Based on first-hand visitor experience, the following 16 items cover the key failure modes at the expo:

# Item Why It Matters
1 Insulated water bottle 32 water stations in venue; bring capacity to carry water between stations
2 Printed venue map Offline, battery-independent navigation; annotate with pavilion entry types
3 Mobile battery (minimum 10,000mAh) QR codes, reservations, cashless payment all run through your phone
4 Offline QR codes (screenshot) Entry and reservation QR codes saved without network dependency
5 Folding chair Significant fatigue reduction during queue waits
6 Sunscreen (SPF 50+) Reapply throughout the day; outdoor queue exposure is sustained
7 Hat Direct sun protection during outdoor movement
8 Sunglasses UV protection; visual comfort
9 Cooling towel Wet and wear on neck; most effective portable heat management tool
10 Salt tablets Electrolyte replenishment; water alone does not prevent heat illness
11 Snacks Energy during queue waits; meal lines at popular restaurants can be long
12 Wet wipes and body sheets Sanitation; sweat management without access to a washroom
13 Small garbage bag Venue bins may be distant; avoid carrying waste to a trash point
14 Eco bag Venue does not provide plastic shopping bags
15 Cashless payment (credit card or IC card) Most venue transactions require cashless; carry minimal cash
16 Light rain cover for electronics Sea location; weather can shift; protect your phone from unexpected rain

Note on the Venue Map

The official app requires login each session and drains battery during navigation. A printed map — updated to the latest version from the official PDF before departure — allows navigation without phone dependency. Add handwritten annotations for your target pavilions: entry method (reservation only / first-come / walk-in), and current availability notes.

Prohibited Items

The following are confiscated at gate security. X-ray screening is in use. Organizing your bag clearly before arrival speeds the process.

Category Specifics
Glass and aluminum Glass bottles and aluminum cans — only plastic bottles and sealed metal insulated bottles are permitted
Alcohol External alcohol is prohibited; alcohol is sold inside the venue
Fireworks and explosives Absolute prohibition
Megaphones and amplifiers Any device capable of directing high-volume sound at others
Selfie sticks and tripods Items extending over 1 meter; compact gimbals may be permitted
Rolling suitcases Any carry-on or checked-bag sized luggage; store at Osaka Station, New Osaka Station, or Sakurajima Station
Personal transport Roller skates, kick scooters, bicycles
Animals Only certified guide dogs, hearing dogs, and assistance dogs

The most common gate problem: Glass-bottled nutritional drinks purchased at the train station convenience store before entry. Check your bag before approaching security.

Suitcase logistics: Travelers arriving by bullet train or airplane should store large luggage at their arrival station before taking the venue access train. The official "Ecbo Cloak" luggage storage service operates at key transit points. Book in advance — walk-in availability is limited during peak periods.

Summary

The preparation checklist is specific because the failure modes are specific. Arriving without a printed map creates a navigation problem when the phone battery runs low. Arriving without a cooling towel creates a physical performance problem by 2 PM. Arriving with a glass bottle means a stop at the gate and disposing of it before entry.

None of these require significant effort to prevent. They all require completing the checklist before departure.

Prepare the evening before. Charge all devices. Print the map. Confirm your prohibited items list. Pack your cooling gear.
