Devices Users Can Repair and Upgrade Themselves
Framework was founded in 2017, and its mission has been clear from day one:
"Making electronics repairable and upgradeable by the users themselves"
The 13-inch and 16-inch laptops Framework has built to date are all designed so users can easily replace parts themselves. Batteries, screens, keyboards, USB ports, memory slots — remove the screws and anyone can swap them out. By replacing aging components with new ones, the device can stay in service for years.
"With most electronics, when something breaks or gets outdated, the assumption is just to throw it away. That's a real waste. If devices could be repaired and upgraded instead, their useful life could be extended dramatically."
An Expanding Product Line
Framework's latest move is the Framework Laptop 12 — a compact 12-inch form factor that joins the existing 13-inch and 16-inch models. Despite being smaller, it packs a 12th-generation Intel Core processor, a full HD touch-capable display, and up to 16GB of RAM. More than enough for serious daily use.
Framework's First Desktop
The Framework Desktop is the company's debut in desktop PCs. It uses a Mini-ITX chassis — compact, but capable of housing up to the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X (12 cores, 24 threads). With an optional GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GPU, 4K gaming is well within reach.
Like all Framework products, these devices are fully user-configurable. You can select the CPU, memory, and storage you want through the online store and build your own system from scratch.
On the new lineup, CEO Patel says:
"Our mission is to create a world where users can freely repair and upgrade their own devices. The 12-inch laptop and desktop are new steps toward that vision."
"The Right to Repair"
Framework is a strong advocate for the right to repair — and that extends well beyond swappable parts. The company publishes free repair manuals and provides community forums where users can share knowledge and help each other.
Framework's Corporate Philosophy
The company's approach also reflects a distinct set of principles:
- Design products from the ground up for long-term use
- Prioritize user satisfaction, even when it requires a larger upfront investment
- Build strong partnerships with component manufacturers to ensure consistent parts availability
These commitments, pursued consistently, are what makes Framework devices genuinely different.
Framework's challenge is nothing less than a rethinking of what electronics are supposed to be — a shift from disposable to durable, from throwaway to upgrade. The company is making that transition happen, steadily.
On the road ahead, CEO Patel says:
"Beyond laptops"
"Beyond laptops, we want to extend the modular design philosophy to smartphones, tablets, wearables — all kinds of electronics. A world where anyone can freely repair and upgrade their own devices. That's the world we're building toward."
Framework's journey is just beginning. How their philosophy reshapes the electronics industry — and our expectations as users — is worth watching closely.
