SXSW Session Report #44: The New World the Metaverse Brings — What Future Possibilities Does Technological Innovation Create?
This talk session explored the possibilities of the metaverse as a virtual world. AR-powered virtual spaces are expected to become more comfortable than physical environments. While some positive cases exist — such as individuals finding greater fulfillment through virtual social interaction — there are also negative examples, such as users directing abusive language at avatar representations of others and uploading that content online. Many challenges remain before the metaverse achieves mainstream adoption, and it may arrive in forms quite different from what we currently expect. Nevertheless, this new world holds enormous potential — for example, it could enable the delivery of healthcare services even in regions facing doctor shortages.
The spread of the metaverse carries both positive and negative implications for society. As AR technology advances and provides environments more comfortable than reality, people's attitudes and behaviors are expected to shift. At the same time, reports of inappropriate use of AR are already emerging as a concern.
