Jeremy Sandmel: Apple silicon has fundamentally transformed gaming, delivering remarkable graphics capabilities to every Mac. And now, tens of millions of Macs can run demanding games with outstanding performance, long battery life, and breathtaking visuals, presenting developers with an unprecedented opportunity to reach more players than ever before.

Since the introduction of Metal 3 with powerful new features like MetalFX Upscaling, demanding games like Resident Evil: Village have seen significant performance improvements. This year, macOS elevates the gaming experience further with Game Mode, giving players an edge when performance is measured in precious milliseconds by ensuring games get the highest priority on CPU and GPU, keeping background task usage low, and delivering a more optimized gaming experience with smoother and more consistent frame rates.

Additionally, Game Mode dramatically reduces AirPods audio latency and significantly reduces input latency for Xbox and PlayStation controllers by doubling the Bluetooth sampling rate, so you can feel the in-game reactions. Game Mode works with all games, including recently released titles and upcoming Mac games.

We're thrilled that developers are bringing more games to Mac. To help with that, Metal introduces a new Game Porting Toolkit to make it easier for developers to port games from other platforms. With these new tools, developers can quickly evaluate how well their game runs on Mac.

What used to take several months can now be accomplished in just days. Furthermore, the process of converting game shaders and graphics code to take full advantage of the powerful capabilities and performance of Apple silicon has been dramatically simplified, greatly reducing total development time. And this year, there's another big game coming to Mac.

To tell you about it all, legendary game creator Hideo Kojima of Kojima Productions takes the stage.

Hideo Kojima: Hello everyone. I'm very happy to be here today to introduce you all to the Mac project we're currently working on.

I myself have been a big fan of Apple since I bought my first Mac in 1994. And it has long been a dream of mine to deliver my team's work on Mac.

Gaming on Mac has finally entered a new era. To mark that era, I'm pleased to announce here that the Mac version of "DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT" has been confirmed for 2023.

With the Mac version of "DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT," I want to deliver a gaming experience that makes the most of Apple's latest technologies.

Starting with MetalFX's High-Precision Graphics

Starting with MetalFX's high-precision graphics, I was very impressed by Metal 3, which combines Apple silicon's outstanding performance and modern rendering pipeline.

I hope many of you will experience this innovative and exciting new Mac environment.

Starting with "DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT," we plan to actively expand future Kojima Productions titles to the platform as well.

Pre-orders for "DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT" are scheduled to open soon, so please look forward to it.

Craig: Thank you, Hideo. Now let's talk about how macOS improves your productivity, starting with video conferencing. We spend a lot of time on video calls, and when you share your screen, your face and presence can sometimes get lost. This year, we have a wonderful new way to help with remote presentations. The new video effect "Presenter Overlay" highlights the presenter by displaying them on top of the shared content.

In Small Overlay, your face appears in a movable bubble so you can be easily seen when showcasing your work. In Large Overlay, the shared screen is beautifully framed beside you, highlighting your presence. It separates you from the background and overlays your screen in between. So you can walk, talk, and move in front of the content.

Thanks to Apple silicon's Neural Engine, you get amazing quality. We also have new Reaction video effects. When you want to express how you're feeling, you can add reactions that seamlessly blend into video using balloons, confetti, hearts, and more. They're fun, with cinematic quality, depth, and focus.

And you can trigger these effects with gestures. When you're truly impressed, holding up two thumbs triggers celebratory fireworks. These new video effects work with any application, including FaceTime, Zoom, Teams, and Webex. Next, let's talk about Safari and how to take it to the next level.

Beth Dakin: Safari is the best way to browse the web. With macOS Sonoma, Safari is the world's fastest browser. It renders the most cutting-edge websites at remarkable speed. Safari is powered by WebKit, providing the excellent technology used in over a million applications.

We're always updating WebKit. Over the past few months, we've added even more features for developers, including beautiful typographic advances and more. Another cornerstone of the Safari experience is privacy. Safari was built from the ground up to protect your privacy and was the first browser to introduce Private Browsing.

This year, we went even further. In Private Browsing, we now lock Private Browsing windows when not in use, completely block known trackers from loading on pages, and remove tracking from URLs you visit in Private Browsing. Of course, one of the best ways to protect yourself on the web is with a strong password, or even better, a passkey.

We've Added the Ability to Securely Share Passwords and Passkeys

We've added the ability to securely share passwords and passkeys with trusted people. Anyone in the group can add and edit passwords to keep them up to date. And sharing happens through iCloud Keychain, so it's end-to-end encrypted. Here's another exciting update to help you stay organized with Profiles.

Many people use Safari for both work and personal browsing and want a way to separate their browsing by topic. With Profiles, you can keep cookies, history, extensions, tab groups, and favorites separate. So you can sign into the same site with a work account and a personal account and switch quickly between them.

And if you're a student, set up a dedicated set of extensions and a collection of favorites just for school. Finally, let me show you how to access your favorite sites even faster on Mac with web apps. Let's check it out. With web apps, you can elevate the websites you use most with great features, just like apps.

I always use Confluence. So I don't want it to get lost among other browsing, so I'll make it a web app. From the File menu, I click "Add to Dock," and the title and icon are loaded automatically. When I click Add, the icon instantly appears in the Dock. I can now close this window in Safari. When you launch a web app, you get a simple toolbar and an app-like experience.

On Mac, you can make a web app for any website, and developers don't need to do any extra work to make web apps look great. Web apps are seamlessly integrated into your Mac experience. So you can access the Pinterest web app with Command-Tab. It also works well with other ways to access apps, like Stage Manager, Mission Control, and Spotlight.

You can also receive notifications. Instacart will notify you that your order has been delivered. And with a click, you can access the Instacart web app. Web apps make it even easier to access your favorite websites on Mac. Back to you, Craig.

Craig: With Profiles, web apps, and major updates to Private Browsing, Safari is the best way to browse the web.

macOS Sonoma features more ways to personalize with widgets and captivating new screen savers, a new level of game performance, and powerful productivity in video conferencing and Safari. Next, let's take a look at audio and the home experience. Whether rocking out to your favorite '80s metal band or watching the latest show to unwind after work, we continue to focus on features that entertain, inspire, and bring us closer together.

So let's start with what's new with AirPods.

Ron Fung: AirPods are the world's most popular headphones, delivering the best personal audio experience throughout the day. From Active Noise Cancellation that removes unwanted background noise to help you focus, to Transparency mode that reduces loud environmental sounds in real time while keeping you connected to the world around you.

Our users love these features today, and we believe there's more we can do. So we're announcing Adaptive Audio. This brings the best of both listening modes together to make it easier to move through an ever-changing environment and interactions. Adaptive Audio dynamically blends Transparency and Active Noise Cancellation to adapt to the conditions around you.

So you can always stay aware of your surroundings since distracting noise is automatically reduced. Adaptive Audio helps you stay focused on your favorite music or podcast. And with Personalized Volume, it uses machine learning to understand your listening preferences over time along with what's happening in the outside world, to deliver the best media experience for you in that moment.

Additionally, We've Added a New Way to Converse

Additionally, we've added a new way to converse with people around you while wearing AirPods Pro. When you start a conversation, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the music, focuses on the voice in front of you, and reduces background noise.

Ron: Another great benefit of AirPods is the ability to take calls on the go.

Even more conveniently, you can quickly mute and unmute with a press when needed. We're also improving the AirPods automatic switching experience across the ecosystem. Transitioning from a phone conference on Mac to your favorite playlist on iPhone is dramatically faster, so you don't miss a single beat.

And when you want to share content with people around you, there's AirPlay. I'll hand it over to Ann for what's coming next.

Ann Park Shedlovsky: AirPlay is the easiest way to share audio, video, and photos to nearby speakers and screens. We're making AirPlay more seamless than ever.

iPhone and iPad now use on-device intelligence to learn your AirPlay preferences. So if you always listen to music while making dinner, the nearby HomePod in the kitchen will automatically appear. What's more, not only can you start playing music from iPhone using AirPlay, but you can now ask HomePod's Siri to start an AirPlay session, so you can play even more of your favorite content just by using your voice.

Just say "Siri, play Arlo Parks on SoundCloud." With so much media at your fingertips on iPhone and iPad, you can enjoy content wherever you are, even while traveling. So we're starting to bring AirPlay to hotels. With AirPlay support in hotels, it's easy to take advantage of the big screen in your room to watch an episode of your favorite show or practice your presentation for tomorrow.

Pairing is simple. Just scan a QR code and tap confirm. That's it. You automatically connect to Wi-Fi and can continue viewing from where you left off. AirPlay will be available at select hotels later this year and will continue to expand. Additionally, there are exciting updates to Apple Music and CarPlay to make your next trip even better.

Today, to add songs during a drive, you need to share your phone, pass a cable, or send a link. We want to let everyone in the car control the music, including those in the back seat. So we were able to bring SharePlay to the car. When the driver's iPhone connects to CarPlay, passengers' iPhones automatically suggest joining the session.

Just tap to connect. From there, it's easy to play music you like, control playback, and enjoy it together. Next, let's talk about tvOS and Apple TV. Apple TV works amazingly well with all your Apple devices, delivering the best TV and all your entertainment. With tvOS 17, we've refreshed the design of Control Center, making it even more intuitive to access AirPods settings, Home cameras, system controls, and user profiles with just a touch of the Siri Remote.

And for when you can't find the Siri Remote, you can now locate it with iPhone and get back to watching TV. Sometimes what you want to see isn't a show. It might be a favorite family photo displayed in your room. If you choose Memories as your screen saver, you can view photos perfectly framed with flowing animations and transitions, letting you enjoy special moments even more.

Our Homes Are Also a Place to Connect

Our homes are also a place to connect with the people who matter most. And for when you're not in the same place, we have a new feature that transforms the living room. FaceTime is coming to Apple TV. Now everyone can gather on the sofa and catch up with friends and family on the big screen.

The new FaceTime app for Apple TV leverages Continuity Camera to unlock a fantastic shared experience at home. When you start FaceTime on Apple TV, it wirelessly connects to your iPhone or iPad, allowing you to join a call using their cameras and microphones. Let's try it right now. You can call from iPhone or from Apple TV.

You can also receive a call from a friend on iPhone and easily move it to Apple TV. Apple TV makes the most of iPhone's and iPad's cameras to create effects like Center Stage. Even as you move around or someone enters the room, you're always framed perfectly. Interactions using gestures are shown on everyone's screens at all times.

And because it's Apple TV, you have access to all your favorite shows and movies too. SharePlay makes it easy to watch together so everyone stays in sync. That's FaceTime on Apple TV. To developers, we suggest adding Continuity Camera APIs to make the biggest screen in your home even more connected and fun.

As a result, apps like Zoom and Webex will come to tvOS for the first time this year. These are just some of the features coming to audio and home. AirPods take personal audio to the next level with Adaptive Audio. AirPlay is coming to hotels too, so you can enjoy content on a big screen even when traveling.

Apple Music lets everyone in the car control the music with SharePlay. And FaceTime is coming to Apple TV, bringing everyone closer through incredible new experiences. Next, Kevin will talk about watchOS updates.

Kevin Lynch: watchOS is the world's most advanced wearable operating system, redefining what people around the world think a watch can do.

We've continued this transformation through new features designed to keep you connected, active, healthy, and safe. As Apple Watch has evolved over the years, it has become more intuitive, more powerful, and easier to access important information. And today, we're taking this even further with watchOS 10.

To mark this major milestone, we've created a new way to quickly see information from any watch face, along with a comprehensive app redesign across all of watchOS.

Let's take a closer look at the energizing new Apple Watch changes. Here's how to view information you're interested in quickly while enjoying a beautiful, portrait-style watch face. From any watch face, you can now display Smart Stack widgets by simply turning the Digital Crown.

At the start of the day, you can get a quick look at the weather forecast and headlines. And Smart Stack uses machine learning to show you what you need, when you need it. So later in the day, it shows upcoming meetings, tasks you need to complete, and medications to log. It's very convenient to see what needs attention next.

And with a long press, you can add widgets like sleep data to the Smart Stack. There are also widgets that can hold your favorite complications, like a timer. Let's start a timer. When you return to the watch face, just scroll up and the timer appears here, making it easy to check the remaining time or tap to pause.

Also Great for Stopwatch, Workout, Podcast Listening

Also great for stopwatch, workout, and podcast listening sessions. This is a fast new way to view information from any watch face. We've also redesigned apps throughout watchOS 10. As an example, let's look at World Clock, which now features dynamic background colors that reflect the time.

You can also instantly tell if it's a good time to call a friend in a different time zone. Let's also look at the Activity app. The app has been redesigned, and tapping the corner icons lets you access the weekly summary, sharing, and awards. We've also redesigned the trophy case so you can see awards in progress and completed challenges.

Additionally, rotating the Digital Crown displays new full-screen views for Move, Exercise, and Stand. Developers can also update their apps using this new design language. Streaks now uses the entire display, making it easy to check progress and access tasks. NBA can convey information about your favorite team more compellingly with team colors and new game content.

And with Waterlmama's design change, just turning the Digital Crown lets you check hydration details for the past 7 days. We also have two new watch faces. Palette is a beautiful new face where three overlapping layers express time in rich, vibrant colors.

As the time changes, the display colors shift too. And to celebrate watchOS 10, we have... Snoopy and Woodstock coming to Apple Watch. These beloved comic strip characters come to life in a variety of animations. They can play with the watch hands, react to local weather, and join you in being active. We're so excited to have Snoopy on Apple Watch. We're thrilled to share a completely new way to experience Apple Watch with watchOS 10, with intelligently redesigned apps that let you take in more information at a glance and new ways to navigate to quickly access content.

Furthermore, we're adding more features to help you stay active, starting with cycling. Cycling is a competitive sport for some and an excellent form of exercise for others. Here Eric shares several new features that make Apple Watch an even more indispensable companion for cyclists.

Eric Charles: Apple Watch already has many great cycling features, like prompts to start workouts if you forget, and fall detection safety benefits.

For many riders, accessories like speed sensors, cadence sensors, and power meters provide important training data. With watchOS 10, Apple Watch can now connect to Bluetooth-enabled cycling sensors. So you can add cadence and power to your standard metrics or try the new cycling power workout view. Using power, heart rate, and motion data, Apple Watch estimates FTP — Functional Threshold Power — the highest level of cycling intensity you can theoretically sustain for one hour.

By taking percentages of FTP, it can provide power zones, making it easy to see which zone you're in and track how much time you spend in each zone. This is an effective and reliable way to improve your performance on the bike. We thought we could do even more for the entire cycling community, so we built a new feature that requires no additional equipment other than your paired iPhone.

With watchOS 10, cycling workouts on Apple Watch now automatically appear as Live Activities on iPhone. Tapping the Live Activity takes over the entire display. This is perfect for views like heart rate zones, elevation, and power zones, and it also shows new views like current and top speed, distance, and more.

You'll love the new workout metrics, views, and experience on your next ride. Next, let's talk about hiking and how we're updating Compass and Maps for your outdoor adventures. With watchOS 10, Compass automatically generates two new waypoints. The new cellular coverage waypoint shows where you last had carrier signal in case you need to check messages or call family.

And in an Emergency

And in an emergency, a separate new waypoint shows locations on the route where you can make emergency calls using available carrier networks. We're also introducing a new elevation display. Using altimeter data, you can see a 3D view of saved waypoints. In addition to these new Compass features, we're also updating Maps.

Starting in the US, we're introducing new topographic maps with contour lines, hill shading, elevation details, and points and trailheads. Using search, you can discover nearby trails and trail head categories. You can also review additional information before heading out, including trail names, difficulty, length, and elevation change.

watchOS 10 also introduces new APIs for developers to create compelling workout experiences. The powerful motion sensors in Apple Watch Series 8 and Ultra can detect sudden changes in direction and acceleration, like swinging a golf club or tennis racket. Developers will now have access to this high-frequency motion data.

For example, Golfshot can detect small movements of the wrist to refine your golf swing. Or to help with a tennis serve, SwingVision can analyze pronation — the twisting motion of the forearm, wrist, and hand. Furthermore, apps like Training Peaks will be able to use the new APIs to create workout programs accessible directly from Apple Watch's Workout app.

These exciting new developer capabilities join the other great watchOS 10 experiences that keep you active. Our users also rely on Apple Watch for their health. Sumbul is here to tell you what's happening for your health.

Sumbul Ahmad Desai: Apple Watch and iPhone offer many important health features, including medications, sleep, and mobility.

With watchOS 10 and iOS 17, as always, privacy-first and science-backed, we're venturing into two new areas. First, mental health. We believe mental health is just as important as physical health, and contributes to it. This affects each and every one of us.

So this year, we want to shine a light on mental health and allow you to care for your mind the same way you care for your body. Reflecting on your mental state can help increase emotional awareness and resilience. Research shows that "checking in on yourself can help you process difficult emotions, appreciate positive moments, and improve your well-being."

So from the Mindfulness app in watchOS 10, you'll be able to log your momentary emotions and daily moods in a subtle and convenient way. You can scroll through an engaging multi-dimensional shape using the Digital Crown to select how you're feeling. To further support your well-being, you can also check what's making you feel that way.

It might be family or travel, or you can further express your feelings with gratitude or excitement. Even without an Apple Watch, you can log your mental state using the Health app on iPhone or iPad. You can see insights like what's contributing most to your mental state, and what role lifestyle factors like exercise, mindful minutes, and sleep are playing.

To better understand your mental state, there may be times you need more support. So you can now take standardized assessments used in clinical settings to answer questions about your feelings. You can also check your current risk for very common and highly treatable conditions like depression and anxiety.

This can help you understand if you need to talk to someone. There's a report of results to share with a care provider, and you can access helpful articles and resources. We understand the importance of prioritizing your mental health — building emotional awareness and resilience through reflection on your mental state — and have screening tools and resources to support your overall health journey.

Another Important Area We're Focusing On This Year

Another important area we're focusing on this year is vision health — specifically the reduction of myopia, which is nearsightedness caused by physical changes to the eye. Myopia is a leading cause of visual impairment worldwide. Currently, it's estimated to affect more than 30% of the population.

And it's expected to rise to 50% by 2050, affecting 5 billion people. Myopia typically begins in childhood, but there are behaviors that can reduce a child's risk of developing it. One is increasing daytime outdoor time. Experts recommend 80–120 minutes per day or more, but knowing whether your child actually did that can be difficult.

Apple Watch can now use its ambient light sensor to measure daytime hours, which you can view in the Health app. With Family Setup, even if your child doesn't have their own iPhone, you can measure their daytime hours from their Apple Watch. And with Health Sharing, parents can track that information.

Another behavior that reduces myopia risk in children is keeping a longer distance when looking at devices or books. For this, we're introducing a new feature called Screen Distance. Using the same TrueDepth camera as Face ID on iPad and iPhone, it measures whether a child is holding the device too close for too long, and prompts them to move it further away.

Screen Distance is also helpful in reducing digital eye strain for adults. We're excited to provide new ways to track and manage vision health. Back to you, Kevin. Kevin: With the addition of support for these two areas, you can learn even more about your health. And as always, privacy is at the core of our work. Your information in the Health app, including mental health and vision health data, is encrypted on your device and cannot be accessed without your passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, and is never shared without your explicit permission.

watchOS 10 is a major milestone, bringing an enormous number of updates to Apple Watch — fresh new designs for quickly viewing information, fun new watch faces, new features for cyclists and hikers, and important tools for health. Back to you, Craig.

Craig: That covers software updates for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and the software underpinning Audio and Home.

We continue to be committed to providing unique features tailored to each device while unifying functionality and performance across devices to deliver a consistent experience. This is a big year for developers. New APIs across all platforms will allow you to incorporate even more innovation into your apps.

And starting with the Platforms State of the Union, an exciting week awaits with 175 sessions, opportunities to engage with Apple engineers in one-on-one labs, and other activities to connect with the global developer community. Our OS releases are available as developer betas starting today, with their respective public betas coming next month.

All of these OS releases are scheduled to be available to users this fall. Now back to Tim.

Tim: Thank you, Craig. Today, we introduced fantastic new Macs and set the direction for the incredible software platforms that power our products. It's already been a big day. But there's one more thing.

This Is a Day I've Been Looking Forward to for Many Years

This is a day I've been looking forward to for many years. I believe AR (augmented reality) is an incredibly powerful technology. By blending digital content with the real world, you can have experiences like never before. So today, I'm pleased to introduce a completely new AR platform and a groundbreaking new product.

Introducing Apple Vision Pro. Vision Pro is a new type of computer that augments reality by seamlessly blending the real world and the digital world. It's the first Apple product you look through, rather than at. Vision Pro is familiar, yet totally new. You can see, hear, and interact with digital content as if it exists in your physical space. And you control Vision Pro using the most natural and intuitive tools: your eyes, hands, and voice.

With Vision Pro, you're no longer confined to a display. Your surroundings become an infinite canvas. Use apps anywhere and make them any size you like. Capture photos and videos, then relive cherished memories in a completely new way. Watch movies, TV shows, sports, and immerse yourself in games on an enormous screen surrounded by Spatial Audio.

And connect with people as if you're sharing the same space. These are just some examples of how Vision Pro blends digital content into the space around us. Just as Mac brought personal computing and iPhone brought mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro will bring spatial computing to us.

This will be the beginning of a journey that brings a new dimension to powerful, personal technology. Alan is here to show us what it's like to use Vision Pro.

Alan Dye: Apple Vision Pro frees you to imagine experiences that have never been possible before. We designed the first fully three-dimensional interface that can be magically controlled with just your eyes, hands, and voice.

When you first put on Vision Pro, you can see your own space and everything in it. The home view is right in front of you. All your apps are right there. Familiar yet revolutionary. The entire interface appears to actually exist in your room. Every element is crafted to feel physical.

It's three-dimensional, dynamically responding to light, and casting shadows that help you perceive scale and distance. The Vision Pro experience isn't constrained by the frame of a display — it can freely fill the space around you. Making apps larger than life is easy. You can also place apps anywhere in your space, exactly where you want them.

It feels natural, like moving real objects. And launching a new app doesn't take space from existing ones. A new app simply occupies a new space centered around you. Having your favorite apps and experiences right there in the room with you is truly special. You can also fully unfurl an app in your space for an experience like a mindfulness session, creating your own quiet moment.

And with Vision Pro, apps and experiences can do even more remarkable things. With Environments, you can grow beyond the size of your physical room. Environments expand and transform your space, enabling experiences that were previously impossible. And they're fully volumetrically captured. So just turning the Digital Crown lets you control the level of immersion.

Expanding part of your room or fully stepping into an environment, you can use these beautiful landscapes to focus, reduce the clutter of a busy space, or as a new inspiring view. Every major Apple platform has been driven by an innovative new input model — Mac with mouse, iPod with click wheel.

And iPhone with multitouch. With Vision Pro, we set an ambitious goal: to design a highly intuitive input model for spatial computing — one that works without controllers or additional hardware. Apple Vision Pro relies solely on your eyes, hands, and voice. Just you and your content. It's remarkable and feels magical.

Just Looking Lets You Browse the System

Just looking lets you browse the system. Effortless. App icons subtly float as you look at them. Every graphical element has life, responding to your gaze. Tap your fingers together to select, a light flick to scroll. With eyes and hands working together, you can have a magical experience.

And all the gestures are designed to be as subtle and natural as possible, so you can keep your hands wherever they're most comfortable — on your lap or on a sofa. Voice also makes every experience better. With Vision Pro, you can look at a search field and start dictating right into it. Voice input this seamless has never existed before.

And with Siri, you can quickly open and close apps, play media, and control the experience. Another fundamental design goal for Vision Pro is to never feel isolated from the people around you. You can see the people around you and they can see you. Eyes are an important indicator of our connection and feelings with people, so Vision Pro displays your eyes when someone is nearby.

Incredible. This groundbreaking innovation is called EyeSight. EyeSight not only reveals your eyes but provides others with important cues about what you're focused on. This is how it looks when you're using an app. And when you're immersed in an experience, it changes like this, sending a clear signal to those around you that you can't see them.

But even when fully immersed, Apple Vision Pro lets you stay connected to the people around you. When someone is nearby, they appear in your field of view.

And Vision Pro simultaneously turns your eyes toward them. Vision Pro's spatial experience seamlessly blends the digital and physical worlds, greatly expanding possibilities.

Whether at home or at work, it unlocks magical new experiences. Alessandra is here to show you what it's like to use Apple Vision Pro.
