SXSW Session Report #43: Accelerating Human Evolution — The Future Possibilities Unlocked by Cutting-Edge Technology
This session covered a talk on future technologies. First, the discussion touched on BCI (brain-computer interface) technology — both invasive and non-invasive interfaces — noting that the FDA is involved in overseeing this space, and that the lack of sufficient privacy regulations poses risks of information leakage. Next, speakers explored the intersection of neuroscientists and legal professionals, and efforts to define the concept of "mental freedom." Laws such as AI Act and GDPR were highlighted as significant in this field. Finally, the session addressed AR/VR experiences in entertainment, noting that the ideal experience differs by individual preference, making it a challenge to identify what constitutes the best experience. It was emphasized that fine-tuning experiences using real-time data and matching them to what people have already experienced are key.
The Noetic Science Institute is deeply interested in unexplored aspects of human potential. Beyond existing practices that emerged from spiritual disciplines, researchers believe new possibilities exist through neuromodulation and feedback-driven approaches.

Privacy Regulations: Still Insufficient
Because privacy regulations remain inadequate, there are growing concerns about privacy violations through non-invasive biometric technology. However, BCI is subject to FDA protections, and invasive interfaces are legally regulated. On this issue, attention needs to be paid to the AI Act and developments within the EU.
The optimal form of AR/VR-based entertainment varies from person to person, so reaching that answer requires leveraging individual preferences and real-time data. This demands imagination and creativity, while technological advancement may give rise to entirely new types of experiences.
