[Full Translation] The Godfather of AI Warns "Technology Could One Day Dominate Humanity" Hinton said we should be alarmed if humans lose the ability to control AI
Geoffrey Hinton, also known as "the Godfather of Artificial Intelligence," has warned of the dangers of AI and is calling on governments and companies to carefully consider the best way to advance technology safely. Hinton left Google earlier this year.
In an Interview with 60 Minutes, This British
In an interview with 60 Minutes, this British computer scientist and cognitive psychologist said: "In five years, it might have better reasoning ability than us."
Hinton is known for his research on AI frameworks. He wonders whether humans fully understand this rapidly developing technology.
"I think we're entering a period where we'll have things that are more intelligent than us for the first time," Hinton said.
He said understanding what the technology is thinking is at least as difficult as reading the human mind.
"We have a pretty good idea of what it's doing," he said. "But when it gets really complicated, we don't know more about what's actually happening than we know about what's going on in your brain."
Hinton Said He Is Alarmed That Humans Could Lose Control
Hinton said he is alarmed that humans could lose control of AI.
"We're entering a very uncertain period where we're dealing with something we haven't dealt with before," he said. "And normally, when you deal with something completely new for the first time, you get it wrong. And you can't afford to get these things wrong."
AI could one day surpass humanity, Hinton warned.
"I'm not saying it will happen. It would be wonderful if we could stop them from ever wanting to do that. But it's not clear that we can stop them from ever wanting to do that," Hinton said.
Hinton believes AI will help improve productivity and efficiency, but he is worried about the risk that many people will lose their jobs and there may not be enough new jobs to compensate.
