Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Himeji, and Wakayama all put on distinctive Christmas programs every year. For date nights, family outings, or friends visiting from out of town, the Kansai Christmas calendar has enough variety to fill multiple evenings. Here's what's on in 2024.

Osaka
1. Osaka Hikari no Kyoen (大阪・光の饗宴) — Kansai's Largest Illumination
The centerpiece of Osaka's winter is the Hikari no Kyoen, centered on Midosuji boulevard and radiating out to Nakanoshima Park and other downtown locations.
- Dates: December 1–25, 2024 (planned)
- Location: Midosuji, Nakanoshima Park, and multiple sites across central Osaka
- Highlights: Approximately 4 million LED lights; lighting of bridges, parks, and the boulevard itself

2. Universal Studios Japan (USJ) — Christmas Limited Events
USJ runs a full Christmas program with special shows, seasonal decorations, and limited-edition merchandise.

Christmas Markets: German-style Christmas markets at Osaka Castle Park and Umeda Sky Building — mulled wine, sausages, ornaments, and seasonal crafts.
Commercial District Illuminations: Grand Front Osaka, Hankyu Umeda Main Store, Abeno Harukas, and other major retail complexes run Christmas illumination programs throughout December.
Osaka Castle Illuminage: Projection mapping light and sound shows at Nishi-no-Maru Garden within Osaka Castle. One of the more visually distinctive events in the city.
Kobe
1. Kobe Illuminage
Kobe's signature winter illumination event, held at Kobe Fruit Flower Park Osawa (道の駅 神戸フルーツ・フラワーパーク 大沢).

- Highlights: Arabian palace theme, sparkling laser installations, and elaborate themed zones

A German-style Christmas market at umie Mosaic plaza in Kobe Harborland.

1. Himeji Castle Illumination
The UNESCO World Heritage Site Himeji Castle serves as the backdrop for a winter illumination that includes 3D projection mapping on the castle walls. The contrast of the illuminated castle against the winter sky is unlike anything in the region.

2. Wakayama Keyaki Light Parade
A 2-kilometer illumination stretch from JR Wakayama Station to Wakayama Castle, lit by approximately 1 million lights. A central symbol tree and large illuminated arches are installed for the season.

Dress for the weather: December in Kansai is cold after dark. Outdoor illumination events are typically 1-2 hours of standing and walking outside. Layer appropriately.
