This represents more than a simple size reduction — it marks a new direction in Microsoft's PC strategy. The Surface series has historically delivered market-shaking innovations in design, from the detachable display of the Surface Book to the floating hinge of the Surface Studio, but these new models represent a more practical, mobility-focused evolution. That said, a clear intent to adapt for the AI era is embedded within them, and they will undoubtedly serve as an important test case for what PCs will look like going forward.

The newly announced "Surface Pro 12-inch" is, as its name suggests, a model that is one size smaller than the traditional Surface Pro lineup, featuring a 12-inch display. It inherits the concept of last year's Surface Pro 11 while being designed as a more portable Copilot+ PC. The first thing that catches the eye is the design changes. Microsoft has rounded the display corners and adjusted the bezels to a uniform width all around, resulting in a more refined and modern overall impression.

Significant changes have also been made to the keyboard. The familiar "Type Cover," which connected to the display at an angle in previous Surface Pro models, has not been adopted in this new model. The new keyboard features a flatter design, which is expected to improve stability when used on the lap. This change may divide opinions, but it reflects a prioritization of the laptop-like user experience. The material used for the palm rest area has also changed — Alcantara, which had previously conveyed a premium feel, no longer covers the palm rest and is now used only on the outside of the keyboard cover. The name has also changed from "Type Cover" to simply "Keyboard," reflecting a move toward a simpler naming convention. This may signal an intent to streamline the product lineup as well.

There are also new color options. While the report highlighted a violet color, a new deep shade called Ocean — reminiscent of racing green — joins the traditional Platinum (silver-toned) option. This gives users more distinctive choices to match their personal style.

The kickstand, a symbol of the Surface series, has no major structural changes. However, one important point to note is that the removable storage (SSD replacement slot) found in previous models is absent when the kickstand is fully opened. This means users can no longer easily swap out storage themselves, compared to a standard Surface Pro. As for the port configuration, two USB-C ports are still included, but the proprietary "Surface Connect port" that has been the charging port for Surface devices for many years has been removed. This is a very significant change, suggesting this port may disappear from the entire Surface device lineup going forward. Charging will now be done via USB-C. While this aligns with the industry trend toward standardizing on the versatile USB-C, users with many Surface Connect accessories may need to prepare adapters.

On the spec front, the Surface Pro 12-inch is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Plus chip, said to offer performance similar to the chip in the base model of last year's Surface Pro 11. The base configuration includes 16GB RAM and 256GB storage, offering sufficient performance for everyday tasks and AI features. As for battery life, while official figures from Microsoft are pending, approximately 12 hours of typical web browsing use is expected.

One of the notable features of this Surface Pro 12-inch is its fanless design. There are no vents visible around the device, resulting in a cleaner appearance. With no fan, the device operates in complete silence, enabling focused work in quiet environments. However, fanless designs have thermal limits under sustained heavy load, so care may be needed for prolonged intensive tasks. This compact Surface Pro can be seen as the effective successor to the Surface Go series, offering an attractive option for users seeking a balance of portability and AI capabilities.

Harmony of Tradition and Evolution: Surface Laptop 13-inch — A Thorough Breakdown of Performance and Portability

The other new device announced simultaneously by Microsoft is the "Surface Laptop 13-inch." As its name indicates, it features a 13-inch display and is smaller than previous Surface Laptop models. This device is positioned as the spiritual successor to the former Surface Laptop Go series, targeting users who want a clamshell laptop that balances portability with affordable pricing. It follows the same concept as viewing the Surface Pro 12-inch as the successor to the Surface Go.

The Surface Pro 12-inch starts at approximately ¥110,000 (around $730), but this does not include the keyboard, which must be purchased separately for approximately ¥20,000. Unfortunately, the older Surface Pro keyboards are not compatible with this new smaller model, so a new purchase is required. The Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at approximately ¥130,000 (around $865). These new models are scheduled to go on sale to consumers from May 20, and to enterprise customers from July.
