Introduction — The New Era of AI × Automotive

Hello, this is Ryuta Hamamoto from TIMEWELL.

The automotive industry is undergoing a once-in-a-century transformation. At the center of the technological trends driving electrification (EVs), autonomous driving, and connected cars is artificial intelligence (AI).

India's largest automotive manufacturer, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), is fully leveraging AI across product development and manufacturing processes to build its next-generation electric SUV lineup. This article covers M&M's AI strategy and the latest developments in EV development.

What Is M&M's AI Integration Platform "MAIA"?

MAIA (Mahindra Artificial Intelligence Architecture), developed by M&M, is a software architecture with AI at its core. It integrates advanced neural engines, cloud services, and connected car technology to deliver a seamless experience for drivers.

Key MAIA Features

Feature Description
ADAS L2+ Advanced driver assistance system optimized for Indian road conditions. Detects animals, pedestrians, barricades, and various vehicles
Collision Avoidance On-board sensors detect vehicles in adjacent lanes and alert the driver
Automatic Braking Emergency automatic braking and adaptive cruise control
Auto Parking Assist AI-powered parking assistance
Aerodynamic Optimization Optimal body design through AI simulation

R. Velusamy, President of Automotive Technology and Product Development at M&M, stated: "AI can be used in the product development process to achieve the best combination of aerodynamic optimization, weight optimization, and crash simulation."

M&M's Electric SUV Lineup (2025–2027)

M&M is making a major push into the electric SUV market. Under the EV brand called Electric Origin, the company is rolling out multiple models.

Key EV Models

Model Features
XEV 9e Flagship electric SUV with innovative design and advanced EV technology
BE 6 Sporty electric SUV, including a Formula E edition
XEV 7e Planned for late 2025 release. 16-speaker Harman Kardon, Dolby Atmos compatible
XEV 9S Higher-end model based on next-generation concept

Furthermore, as a vision for 2027 and beyond, M&M unveiled four concept cars (Vision.S, Vision.X, Vision.T, Vision.SXT) at the Freedom NU event, previewing a next-generation SUV lineup based on the newly developed NU_IQ platform.

AI × Manufacturing Process — Cost Reduction and Quality Improvement

What Velusamy particularly emphasizes is AI utilization in the manufacturing process, not just product features.

Aerodynamic Simulation Efficiency

Traditionally, aerodynamic design of a vehicle body required more than 400 computer simulations. By introducing AI algorithms, this was reduced to approximately 250 simulations. This dramatically reduces computer runtime while achieving the same or better design precision.

Safety Standards Compliance

M&M's Freedom NU series is designed to meet the Bharat NCAP 5-star safety standard. The XUV 7XO features more than 120 safety functions, 75 of which come as standard equipment. These include 6 airbags, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), and Hill Descent Control.

Apollo Tyres: AI Utilization in Indian Manufacturing

M&M is not the only manufacturer leveraging AI. Apollo Tyres, India's second-largest tire maker, has also introduced AI into its manufacturing processes, achieving the following results at no additional cost:

  • Over 8% improvement in manufacturing efficiency
  • Improved quality control precision
  • Increased production volume at factories

This is a good example showing that AI adoption can improve manufacturing efficiency without large-scale capital investment.

The Future That AI in the Automotive Industry Brings

AI utilization in the automotive industry will accelerate further going forward.

Expected Changes

  • Dramatic safety improvements: Significant reduction in traffic accidents through ADAS, collision avoidance, and lane departure prevention
  • Manufacturing cost optimization: Cost reduction through simulation efficiency improvements and AI-driven quality control
  • Reduced environmental footprint: Decreased energy consumption through efficient EV design and manufacturing process optimization
  • Personalized experiences: AI learns driving patterns and provides optimized in-car environments tailored to individuals

WARP AI Consulting — Supporting AI Adoption in Manufacturing

Not just in the automotive industry, but across manufacturing in general, AI utilization is becoming a source of competitive advantage. TIMEWELL's WARP AI Consulting is a service that supports AI and DX adoption in manufacturing industries.

  • WARP: End-to-end support from current state analysis through AI introduction and operation
  • WARP NEXT: Monthly-update continuous consulting
  • WARP BASIC: AI utilization fundamentals training for employees

If you are a company looking to use AI to improve manufacturing efficiency and quality like M&M and Apollo Tyres, please reach out for a consultation.

Summary

  • M&M developed its proprietary AI platform "MAIA" and equipped its electric SUVs with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS L2+)
  • Multiple electric SUVs including the XEV 9e, BE 6, and XEV 7e are planned for release from 2025 to 2027
  • AI simulation improved aerodynamic design efficiency by approximately 40%, reducing development costs
  • All models aim for the Bharat NCAP 5-star safety standard
  • Apollo Tyres also achieved over 8% manufacturing efficiency improvement through AI adoption
  • AI utilization in the automotive industry brings major advances from the perspectives of safety, cost, and environment

China-Related Transactions Export-Control Screening Sheet (fill-in / Export Control Law & Dual-Use Regulations, critical minerals, Control List, 2026)

A fill-in working sheet for companies trading with China: screen a single transaction against China's export-control regime (the Export Control Law and the Dual-Use Items Export Control Regulations), the controls on critical minerals (gallium/germanium/graphite/antimony/tungsten etc./rare earths/helium), and the four counterparty-list systems (Control List, Watch List, Unreliable Entity List, countermeasure lists). A procedure for "what to check before the deal," not a roster of "who is listed." With a plain-language intro, based on MOFCOM announcements. Listing is a regulatory category, not a judgment about any company (including the Japanese firms on the Japan-directed lists); controls change continually, so verify current announcements and consult your officer. Match counterparties using the original simplified-Chinese wording.
