Canva Create 2025: The Platform Moves Beyond Design
Canva holds two major update events per year. The 2025 edition, held on April 10 (Los Angeles time), announced more than 40 new features and updates — the largest rollout in the company's history. This is not a routine feature release. The scale and direction of what was announced signals that Canva is repositioning itself from a design tool into a comprehensive business productivity platform.
The headline feature is Canva Sheets — a spreadsheet capability built directly into Canva. But the broader picture includes significant AI capability expansions, a new code generation tool, major updates to the presentation, whiteboard, and photo editor tools, and improvements that experienced users have been waiting for.

Canva Sheets: Spreadsheet Functionality Inside Canva
What It Is
The biggest announcement of Canva Create 2025 is the addition of spreadsheet functionality to the Canva platform. A new "Spreadsheet" option on the home screen opens a familiar grid interface — cells, rows, columns — with the addition of Canva's design capabilities layered on top.
The practical change: tasks that previously required switching between a spreadsheet tool and a design tool can now be completed in one place. Data input, calculation, chart creation, and design integration happen in a single workflow.
Canva-Specific Features in Sheets
Beyond standard spreadsheet functionality, Canva Sheets offers features that distinguish it from Google Sheets or Excel:
Images in cells: Insert photos directly into spreadsheet cells — useful for project management boards with profile photos, product lists with images, or any document that benefits from visual data.
Dropdown lists and calendar inputs: Constrain data entry with dropdown options; use calendar-format date entry. These are standard for improving data consistency in forms and tracking documents.
Templates: A range of pre-built templates covers travel itineraries, project tracking, event budgets, customer lists, and sales calculators. The "Applicant Profile" template, for example, pre-configures fields for candidate name, contact information, interview date, selection status (dropdown), and portfolio image cell — a functional hiring management tool that can be used immediately.
Magic Functions: Natural Language Formulas
Magic Functions allows users to write what they want to calculate in plain language and have AI translate it into the appropriate formula.
Example: a table with sales data. Select the cell where you want the total, choose "Magic Functions" from the action menu, and type "sum column B" in Japanese or English. The AI identifies the correct SUM function, shows the result, and inserts it with a single click. Users without formula knowledge can perform complex calculations without learning syntax.
Magic Analysis: AI Data Insights (Canva Pro, Beta)
Magic Analysis generates automatic analysis of selected data ranges. Select the data, choose "Magic Analysis," and enter a plain-language query such as "analyze customer satisfaction." The AI produces text summaries ("average satisfaction score is 4.4," "highest-rated item is...") and generates visual charts automatically.
The outputs — text summaries and charts — can be copied into the spreadsheet or used in a Canva design. Note: the beta version performs better with English instructions than Japanese for complex analysis requests; 500 uses per month for Canva Pro.
Magic Graph: One-Click Chart Generation
Select a data range, choose "Magic Graph," and pick from a range of chart types: pie, bar, line, histogram, funnel. The chart is generated instantly and fully editable — colors, fonts, and styles adjustable to match any design. Magic Graph is available in the free plan.
Formula Error Detection
If a formula contains an error, the AI flags it visually (red indicator). Click the indicator to see the AI's suggested correction. Accept it to replace the error with the corrected formula. This reduces calculation mistakes in documents shared across teams.
AI Evolution and Platform-Wide Updates
Updated Interface
Canva's interface has been redesigned. A new "Canva AI" button in the left menu provides direct access to all AI capabilities — image generation, text generation, code generation — from a single hub. This reduces the time to find and start using AI tools within the platform.
Image Generation: Stronger and More Flexible
AI image generation now supports higher output resolution with one-click upscaling (from approximately 1,472 × 832px to approximately 2,900px). Generated images can be used as-is or opened in the Canva editor for further modification.
New capabilities include:
- Style variations: generate new images in a different style (photorealistic, watercolor, anime) while keeping the same base composition
- "Generate similar" from any output to create variations
- Partial replacement: describe one element to change ("replace the peaches with bananas") while keeping the rest of the image
Canva's image generation generally performs better with English prompts than Japanese for complex scenes.
Canva Code: Interactive Web Content from Text
Canva Code generates HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from a plain-language description. The output is interactive — not a static design, but a functional web interface.
In the demonstration, the input was: "Create an interactive menu for my restaurant" with a list of items (pasta, pizza, salad). The output was a working web page where items could be added, quantities adjusted, and total costs calculated in real time.
The generated code can be embedded directly inside a Canva design. This feature is not for building production web applications — it is for prototyping, demonstrations, and mockups that need to feel interactive rather than just look good.
Website Creation: Unlimited Pages
Canva's website builder now supports unlimited pages, removing the previous page count limit. More substantial websites — multi-page company sites, portfolios, landing page systems — can now be built entirely within Canva.
Mixed Page Sizes in One File
The design editor now supports different page sizes within a single file. Previously, adding a presentation-format slide to an Instagram-format design required opening a separate file. With the update, clicking the arrow next to the "Add Page" button lets you choose a different size for the new page — presentation, A4, social media format — within the same project.
A practical workflow example: create Instagram posts, a presentation, and a whiteboard brainstorming session all in one file, switching between them as the project develops.
AI Speaker Notes for Presentations (Canva Pro)
The presentations tool now includes AI-generated speaker notes. Open the "Notes" section in slide editing, click "Generate Notes," and the AI analyzes the slide content — text and images — to write speaking notes appropriate to the material. Generated notes can be summarized, rewritten in a more conversational tone, or regenerated in a different style.
This reduces preparation time for presentations and helps ensure that delivered remarks stay connected to the slide content.
Offline Presentations
Canva presentations can now be cached for offline use. From the "Recent Designs" list, select the file, open the three-dot menu, and enable "Offline Presentation." The presentation data is stored locally and runs as a slideshow without an internet connection.
Note: embedded YouTube videos and external links requiring internet connectivity will not function in offline mode.
Whiteboard, Photo Editor, and Animation Updates
Whiteboard: Line Snapping Improvements
The whiteboard received improvements to how lines connect to shapes. Previously, lines could only snap to specific anchor points on a shape (typically the center or corners). The update allows lines to snap to any point along the edge of a shape — a significant quality-of-life improvement for drawing flowcharts and mind maps.
A new quick-add function lets users expand diagrams by clicking directional arrows that appear on selected shapes, adding a connected shape in that direction without manually positioning it.
Photo Editor: AI-Powered Editing from the Home Screen
The photo editor is now accessible directly from the Canva home screen as a standalone tool — no need to open a design project to do basic photo editing. Upload a photo and begin editing immediately.
New features in the photo editor include:
Click selection tool: AI identifies objects in a photo (person, product, background, sky) by recognition. Click any object to select it; apply color adjustments, brightness changes, or other edits to that object only. Previously, only "foreground" and "background" selections were available — the click selection tool provides object-level precision.
AI background generation (Canva Pro): After removing a background with the one-click background removal tool, enter a text prompt describing the new background. The AI generates multiple options based on the description, matching the lighting and perspective of the remaining subject. Example prompt: "Snow-covered Alpine landscape with the warm diffused light of sunrise." Select the best option to apply.
Perspective correction: A crop tool with perspective adjustment allows users to correct building tilt, lens distortion, and similar geometric issues with slider controls.
Animation: Four New Styles
Four new animation options have been added:
- Shake Zoom: Object shakes while zooming in or out — dynamic, high-energy movement
- Whip Slide: Object whips across the screen — fast, directional movement with momentum
- Analog TV: Vintage CRT-style noise and distortion effect — retro visual character
- Chrome Wave: Metallic, reflective wave pattern — high-impact, futuristic appearance
These additions expand the expressive range available for social media content, presentations, and video advertising.

Canva Create 2025 is a significant shift in the platform's direction. Canva Sheets in particular removes the boundary between data work and design work that has defined Canva's position until now.
