OpenAI Announces ChatGPT via Phone and WhatsApp
On December 19 (Japan time), OpenAI announced that ChatGPT is now accessible via phone calls and WhatsApp.
Previously available only through web and mobile apps, ChatGPT can now be used over a phone line. This development suggests that call center operations and telephone customer service handled by human operators may, in the future, be managed by AI.
This article explains in detail how to use ChatGPT by phone and on WhatsApp, along with the benefits of each.

ChatGPT by Phone — Voice-Based Dialogue Becomes Reality
OpenAI has launched a service that allows ChatGPT to be accessed by phone within the United States. Users can call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to have voice conversations with ChatGPT.
In a demonstration, the service was shown helping a user learn greeting phrases in Spanish for a friend's grandmother who only speaks Spanish, and identifying a building simply by hearing its description. ChatGPT is able to provide accurate answers to a wide variety of questions over the phone as well.
This feature has the advantage of working wherever there is a phone line, even in environments where stable mobile data is unavailable. That means it can be used not just on mobile phones but also on traditional landlines, including rotary dial phones.
OpenAI offers 15 minutes of free calling per month; users who wish to speak longer can create an account in the app for extended access. (Currently available within the United States only.)
ChatGPT on WhatsApp — Integration with a Global Messaging Platform
OpenAI has integrated ChatGPT with WhatsApp, the messaging app used by people around the world. Users can add ChatGPT as a contact by entering the phone number (1-800-242-8478) and then easily exchange messages with ChatGPT on WhatsApp.
In a demonstration, users asked ChatGPT for a pasta sauce recipe and had it modified to a vegan or meat-based version.
The WhatsApp integration makes ChatGPT more accessible to a broader audience. Currently, the service supports text-based conversation only, but future updates are planned to enable additional features such as image search through account authentication.
OpenAI's Mission — Making AI Useful for All of Humanity
OpenAI's Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil, described the company's mission as follows:
"OpenAI's mission is to make artificial general intelligence beneficial for all of humanity, and to do that, it's important to make it accessible to as many people as possible."
Making ChatGPT available by phone and WhatsApp is an important step toward realizing this mission. By providing ChatGPT for free to anyone — not just professional users working with advanced AI models — OpenAI can deliver the benefits of AI to a much wider audience.
What This Means Going Forward
OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT on phone and WhatsApp is an important initiative for improving AI accessibility. The integration with voice calling and a global messaging platform means more people than ever will be able to use ChatGPT. In addition, telephone customer service operations, traditionally handled by human operators, may increasingly be handled by AI in the future.
We can look forward to OpenAI's technology — including ChatGPT — continuing to enrich our lives.
