WWDC 2023 — June 5 | Apple_01

Tim Cook: Good morning. Welcome to WWDC! And welcome to Apple Park! Today we're making announcements about our latest technologies and platforms. We love seeing our incredible developers take big ideas and turn them into incredible apps.

It's remarkable to think that the App Store, which changed everything, is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Together with iPhone, the apps developers have built have created entirely new industries, enriched the lives of users, and helped change the world. We're committed to giving developers the resources, tools, and opportunities to do their best work.

We're holding the Worldwide Developers Conference. I'm thrilled that we could kick it off with announcements this morning. Our teams keep innovating and creating breakthrough experiences for our customers. The deep integration of hardware, software, and services is what delivers the magic people feel when they use our products.

That's something only Apple can do. Today at WWDC, we're making our biggest announcements ever. We'll talk about the future of our incredible software platforms, and we'll introduce some exciting new products. Let me first turn it over to John to talk about Mac.

John Ternus: Mac has been completely transformed by the transition to Apple silicon — with industry-leading performance, new capabilities, and incredible battery life. And developers have used Apple silicon to advance their apps further than ever before, enabling things that simply weren't possible previously.

And its power-efficient performance allows us to create new systems we could only dream about before — like the amazing M2-powered 13-inch MacBook Air. Incredible performance, a vibrant display, all-day battery life, and an impressive design: we love this Mac. And it's also the best-selling laptop in the world.

Today, we have even bigger news about another product that Apple silicon makes possible.

Introducing the 15-inch MacBook Air — the world's best 15-inch laptop. Kate will tell you all about it.

Kate Bergeron: The new Air has everything you want in a 15-inch notebook. It starts with a design that feels remarkably thin and light, yet incredibly solid and durable. At just 11.5mm thin, it's the world's thinnest 15-inch laptop. And it weighs just over three pounds — making it easy to carry anywhere.

It features MagSafe charging, two Thunderbolt ports, and a headphone jack for versatile connectivity. And it comes in four gorgeous finishes, including Midnight and Starlight. The Air features a stunning Liquid Retina display. Its expansive 15.3-inch screen is framed by thin 5mm borders, so you can see even more of your content.

With up to 500 nits of brightness and support for a billion colors, everything looks amazingly rich and vibrant. A 1080p camera and three-mic array make it perfect for video calls, so your voice always comes through clearly. And the new Air sounds incredible too — with six speakers, including force-canceling woofers, delivering immersive Spatial Audio.

Powering all of this is the M2 chip, delivering incredible performance and battery life. The new Air is, in fact, up to 12x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Air. And it delivers an incredible 18 hours of battery life. So what makes the new Air the world's best 15-inch laptop? 15-inch laptops always involve trade-offs between performance, display resolution, battery life, and design.

Compared to the Best-Selling 15-inch PC Laptop with a Core i7

Compared to the best-selling 15-inch PC laptop with a Core i7 processor, MacBook Air is up to 2x faster. The display resolution is also 2x higher, with 25% greater brightness. Even with better performance and a better display, the battery life is up to 50% longer than the PC. And in terms of design, the Air is nearly 40% thinner and 1.5 kg lighter than the PC.

And with its fanless design, it runs in complete silence. The new Air has all of this, and it's the only 15-inch laptop that does. If it's your first Mac, you'll find it incredibly easy to set up and use. And once you start, you'll experience seamless integration with iPhone. Universal Clipboard lets you copy something on your iPhone and paste it on your Mac.

And with Handoff, you can pick up where you left off reading a thread in Messages. This is the new 15-inch MacBook Air — a massive display, M2's incredible performance, a six-speaker sound system, outstanding battery life, all packed into the world's thinnest 15-inch notebook. Back to John.

John: We're incredibly excited about the all-new MacBook Air, the world's best 15-inch laptop.

Starting at just $1,299 — and $1,199 for education. You get an incredible laptop at an unbelievable price. You can order it today, and it goes on sale next week. And the 13-inch MacBook Air has been reduced to $1,099 — $100 less than before. The M1 13-inch Air is $999.

So customers have more choices than ever to find the perfect Air. That's MacBook Air. Now let's talk about pro products. Earlier this year, we announced M2 Pro and M2 Max alongside the new MacBook Pro and Mac mini, and users were blown away by the performance. Now, starting with Mac Studio, we have even more exciting news for pro users.

Mac Studio, announced last year, was a completely new product designed for pros, and it's achieved remarkable results. People are amazed by what Mac Studio can do, and user satisfaction is extremely high. Its incredible performance and rich connectivity in a compact form factor that fits on your desk have been widely praised.

And today you can already find it at the heart of hundreds of thousands of home and professional studios around the world. NBC, for instance, uses it to produce Saturday Night Live every week. Air Studios uses it for sound engineers to bring blockbuster films to life. And Lux uses it for software developers creating cutting-edge apps like Halide.

Today, we're delivering the first major update to Mac Studio. Jennifer will tell you more.

Jennifer Mayer: Mac Studio is loved by users for its incredible performance and connectivity — and today, both get even better. First, Mac Studio gets the formidable M2 Max.

Developers can build new versions of their apps at warp speed — up to 25% faster than M1 Max. Motion graphics designers using After Effects can render up to 50% faster than M1 Max. Mac Studio with M2 Max is 4x faster than the most powerful Intel-based iMac. And that's not all. Today, we're adding the final chip to the M2 family — taking Mac performance to a whole new level.

Introducing M2 Ultra. This chip is a monster! By connecting two M2 Max dies with our breakthrough UltraFusion architecture, we've doubled the performance of M2 Max. M2 Ultra's 24-core CPU delivers up to 20% faster performance than M1 Ultra. Its 76-core GPU is up to 30% faster than M1 Ultra. And the 32-core Neural Engine is 40% faster.

M2 Ultra Supports a Massive 192GB of Unified Memory

M2 Ultra supports a massive 192GB of unified memory — 50% more than M1 Ultra — enabling things that simply aren't possible with other chips. For example, it can train large ML workloads — like large transformer models that exceed the memory of the most powerful discrete GPUs — in a single system.

That's M2 Ultra. Our largest and most capable chip ever. Combining a powerful CPU and GPU, and an enormous memory bandwidth in a single SoC, it's the most powerful chip ever built for a personal computer. And today, we're putting M2 Ultra in Mac Studio, pushing performance even further. Compared to Mac Studio with M1 Ultra, colorists using DaVinci Resolve now get up to 50% faster video processing.

3D artists using Octane can now render up to 3x faster! And M2 Ultra's media engine lets video editors play back 22 streams of 8K ProRes video. No computer in the world comes close! Mac Studio with M2 Ultra is a whopping 6x faster than the most powerful Intel-based iMac.

M2 Max and M2 Ultra take Mac Studio performance to an entirely new level. For connectivity, Mac Studio now features higher-bandwidth HDMI, enabling resolutions up to 8K and frame rates up to 240Hz. With M2 Ultra, it supports six Pro Display XDRs, driving over 1 billion pixels! This is the new Mac Studio — a powerhouse product for demanding workflows.

And we're not done yet. Some pro users demand ultimate performance but also rely on internal PCI expansion — like the audio engineers at Skywalker Sound who work on feature films including the Oscar-winning Top Gun, and the artists at Color Collective who grade films like the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once.

So today, we're bringing Apple silicon to our most expandable pro product: Mac Pro with Apple silicon. Combining Apple's most powerful chip with PCI expansion to handle the most demanding workflows. Every Mac Pro now includes the extraordinary performance of M2 Ultra. Compared to the fastest Intel-based Mac Pro, real-world professional workflows like video transcoding and 3D simulation are up to 3x faster.

A big reason for this is the massive amount of unified memory in M2 Ultra — up to 192GB. The new Mac Pro can do things that simply weren't possible before, like rendering Disney's Moana island scenes with their enormous geometry and textures. Another reason is that M2 Ultra's Media Engine accelerates video processing.

The Intel-based Mac Pro achieved this with a card, Afterburner, capable of playing back three streams of 8K ProRes video. Now, Afterburner performance is built into every Mac Pro — not just one card, but the equivalent of seven Afterburner cards! That's incredible! In fact, using six video I/O cards, Mac Pro can ingest 24 4K camera feeds and encode them to ProRes in real time on a single machine.

Additionally, Mac Pro now has a total of eight Thunderbolt ports — six on the back and two on the top — twice as many as before, further advancing its broad and powerful connectivity. Mac Pro adds PCI expansion to Apple silicon: six open expansion slots with support for Gen 4, which is 2x faster than before.

This lets users customize Mac Pro with the cards they need for audio and video I/O, networking, storage, and more. And it comes in both tower and rack mount configurations. This is the all-new Mac Pro with Apple silicon — M2 Ultra's incredible performance, formidable connectivity, and PCI expansion versatility take the most demanding workflows to an entirely new level. Back to John.

John: Today we announced not one but two of the most powerful Macs ever. Mac Studio with M2 Max starts at $1,999 — an incredible value for pro users. And Mac Pro, now significantly more powerful with M2 Ultra, starts at $6,999. Both are available to order today and go on sale next week.

Alongside our other pro systems, they give users the most powerful and capable lineup of pro products Apple has ever offered. And with this, the transition to Apple silicon — which has completely transformed the desktop and notebook experience — is complete. And we're just getting started. For Intel-based Mac users, every Mac is now a massive upgrade.

And for PC users, there's never been a better time to switch to Mac. Back to Tim.

And the Integration of Hardware and Software Brings Our Products to Life

The integration of hardware and software is what brings our incredible products to life. Our software platforms enable developers to do great work and deliver amazing experiences for users. So, Craig is here to tell us about the new features in our software platforms.

This year, we've looked at the entirety of the iPhone experience and delivered exciting new features that make everything you do on iPhone more personal and intuitive. With the next release, iOS 17, we're delivering more expressive communication, simpler sharing, more intelligent input, and brand-new experiences to your iPhone.

Let's start with major updates to three apps that are central to everyday communication: Phone, FaceTime, and Messages. The Phone app is essential to the iPhone experience. Some of our most special moments start with a phone call.

First, we're introducing a new way to express yourself with Contact Posters — so you can customize how you appear when you call someone. Contact Posters support beautiful photography and eye-catching typography. For Chinese and Japanese, there's a new layout using vertical text that looks stunning.

This rich new visual identity doesn't just appear during calls. It also becomes part of your contact card, so you have a consistent look wherever you communicate and share. The poster is yours to control — you customize it the same way you customize your Lock Screen. Choose an image, font, and color.

The possibilities are endless. And whether it's from a neighbor, friend, or boss, you'll show up in a whole new way when you call someone. And for developers, it's all connected to CallKit, so posters appear for calls via third-party VoIP apps too. Next, we're introducing a powerful new feature to help you better decide when to pick up incoming calls: Live Voicemail.

When you get a call from a number you don't recognize, you're not always sure whether to pick up. But with this system, when the caller leaves a message, you can read a real-time transcription of what they're saying. If it's something you need to act on right away, you can pick up the phone and speak with them.

This is also great for calls from friends and family. If you're in a meeting and your phone rings, you can check whether the call is urgent or if it can wait until the meeting ends. The voicemail appears on screen, so you can decide in the moment whether to answer.

Powered by the Neural Engine, Live Voicemail transcription is processed on device, protecting your privacy. There's also a major update for another type of call: FaceTime adds one of the most requested communication features. When you call someone on FaceTime and they're not available, you can now leave them a video message.

So whether you're saying hello or want to share a precious moment, you can leave a message for them to enjoy later. Next, Kim will tell us about an update to another form of communication we use and love every day.

Kim Beverett: Messages is how we stay connected with the people who matter most.

Let me start with a quick overview of some of the key improvements that make Messages faster and easier to use. First, search filters make search more powerful and precise. Start a search, then add more terms to narrow down results and find exactly what you're looking for.

Jump to New Messages with the Catch-Up Arrow

Next, a new catch-up arrow in the top right corner of a conversation lets you jump to the first message you haven't seen — perfect for busy days when a group chat has been active. Swipe to reply inline, faster than ever. And when you receive an audio message but can't listen right away, you can now read a transcription of it and listen later.

Location sharing lets you see a friend's location directly in a conversation. Next, we're introducing an important new feature for when you want to let someone know you've arrived home safely: Check In. Whether walking home after sunset or going for an early morning run, you can start a Check In to let your family or friends know you made it home.

When you arrive, Check In automatically detects that you're home and notifies your friend. But if something unexpected happens along the way, it will recognize that you're not making progress toward your destination and check in with you. If there's no response, it will automatically share useful information like your current location, the route you traveled, your battery level, and your cell service status, so your friend knows whether you might be able to pick up.

And the information you share with your friend is end-to-end encrypted. That's Check In — an easy way to let the people you care about know you're safe. We've also redesigned access to all iMessage apps. The apps that used to line the keyboard are now elegantly tucked away, giving conversations a smart, fresh look.

Just tap the new plus button, and you'll see everything you send most — photos, audio messages, locations, and more. Swipe up to see all your iMessage apps too. And within this menu is a completely new sticker experience you're going to love.

Tap the plus button, then tap Stickers, and you'll see a brand-new drawer with all my stickers in one place — recent stickers, Memoji, and any sticker packs you've downloaded. We've also made all emoji into stickers — they're peel-and-stick. You can rotate and resize them! Last year, we introduced the ability to lift subjects from photos.

Now those subjects can become stickers. Tap the new Live Stickers tab and you'll see stickers you've made from your own photos. Let me show you how to make one. Tap the plus button — I can choose any photo from here and make it into a sticker. And check this out: tap the Live Photos tab and you'll see all the Live Photos that make great animated stickers.

Want to make this into a sticker? It then gets added to your Live Stickers tab. From there, you can send stickers inline or peel and place them, just like this. You can even add effects to Live Stickers. And tilt your phone in Messages to bring stickers to life. And you can now add stickers directly to a bubble from the tapback menu to react to messages.

The fun extends beyond Messages. We've added stickers system-wide, so you can access your sticker collection everywhere you can access emoji — in markup and in every app, including third-party apps. That's Messages. Back to Craig.

Craig: With updates to Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, our everyday communication is going to be so much richer.

iPhone has so many ways to share content with others. And there are exciting updates to sharing with AirDrop. AirDrop makes it easy to share files with colleagues or send photos to friends in seconds. This year, we're expanding AirDrop with new ways to share — like exchanging your phone number with someone new.

Today you have to hand over your phone, or one person dictates their info while the other types it in. But there's a better way: NameDrop. With NameDrop, just bring two phones close together. Your Contact Posters appear, along with easy controls to choose which phone number or email you want to share! And to make contact sharing even more convenient, NameDrop works between iPhone and Apple Watch too.

This gesture can also be used to AirDrop content, making it easier than ever to kick off a shared experience. When you want to share beautiful photos from your latest adventure, just bring two phones together. It's that simple. And now, even if you need to walk away while someone is sending you a large batch of photos or a big video file, you can move out of AirDrop range and the content will continue to be sent securely at full quality over the internet.

For Example, Starting a SharePlay Activity Instantly

For example, you can instantly start a SharePlay activity — like sharing music while on a run to sync up to the same beat. For developers, any app that supports SharePlay will automatically get this functionality, so you can bring devices together to watch the same live stream on Twitch or jump into a coding game together on Imagii.

Sharing is easier than ever. Next, let me tell you about enhancements that make text input on keyboard and dictation even smarter.

In iOS 17, we've made a major update to keyboard intelligence, improving the experience with every keystroke. It starts with the core feature for accurate typing on iPhone: autocorrect.

Autocorrect is powered by on-device machine learning, and we've continued to evolve these models over the years. The keyboard now leverages transformer language models — the state of the art in word prediction — making autocorrect more accurate than ever. With the power of Apple silicon, iPhone can run this model with every keystroke you make.

Autocorrect is now also more capable, with a redesign to better support your typing. Sentence-level autocorrect can correct more types of grammatical mistakes. And if autocorrect doesn't do what you wanted, tap the underlined word to see your original text and revert instantly.

And for those moments when you just want to type a particular word — well, the keyboard will learn to let you do that. On the subject of typing speed, predictive text already helps you quickly finish, add, or change words. We've made predictions even smarter by showing them inline as you type, so you can complete a word or a whole sentence just by tapping the spacebar.

Predictions also get better based on the phrases and words you use, making them more personalized. The other core feature of the keyboard — dictation — now features a new transformer-based speech recognition model that leverages the Neural Engine to further improve accuracy. Together, these updates make typing on iPhone better than ever.

Finally, here's Adeeti to tell you about an exciting new experience in iOS 17.

Adeeti Ullal: Recalling special moments in life is incredibly powerful. I often hear from people that they love watching memory movies made from their photos.

So we wanted to create a new way for people not just to remember their experiences but to write about them — drawing inspiration from rich details about the day: people, places, activities, and music. Today, we're introducing a brand-new app, Journal, coming to iPhone later this year.

Journal is a great way to practice gratitude, which has been shown to improve wellbeing. With Journal, you can get started easily and start receiving these benefits. Using on-device machine learning, your iPhone can create personalized suggestions of moments to spark your writing. Suggestions are intelligently curated from information on your iPhone — photos, location, music, workouts, and more.

You're in control of what to include when enabling suggestions, and which suggestions to save to your journal. For developers, we're making suggestions available as an API, so you can use them in your apps. Some suggestions are personalized, while others are reflection prompts that inspire you to write on a variety of themes.

Any Suggestion Can Start a New Journal Entry

Any suggestion can start a new journal entry. Let's take a look at a moment from a trip — where you went, music you listened to, photos you took. You can add these to your journal with just a tap. And you can respond to a prompt like "What was the highlight of your day?"

Capturing life's precious moments and marking what's important lets you look back and find new insights or set new goals. You can also set a notification to remind you to write at the beginning or end of your day, or to let you know when new suggestions become available — helping you stay consistent. Of course, your suggestions and entries are deeply personal, and Journal is designed to keep them private.

On-device processing, end-to-end encryption, and the ability to lock Journal ensure that no one but you — not even Apple — can access your journal. That's Journal. Back to Craig.

Craig: Journal will be an amazing way to preserve rich, powerful memories and practice gratitude. Now I'm really excited to tell you about another new experience coming to iOS 17.

When you have your iPhone with you, you can have the information you need, whenever you need it. We saw an opportunity to create something new for moments when you set your iPhone down. That's StandBy. Just turn iPhone on its side while charging, and you get a full-screen new experience designed to be glanceable from a distance.

StandBy is perfect for a nightstand, kitchen counter, or desk. And with the Always-On Display on iPhone 14 Pro, it's always available. Wake up and it's easy to check the time. And it's easy to personalize — swipe up to choose from a variety of beautiful clock styles. Swipe sideways to relive your favorite moments with photos.

StandBy automatically shuffles your best shots, making full use of the screen. And with the power of widgets, information is even more accessible. Swipe through each widget stack to see the current weather, home controls, and your favorite third-party widgets. They're smart stacks too, so just like your Home Screen, they automatically show the right information at the right time.

Like your schedule before a meeting starts. And since it supports Live Activities, you'll see game scores and when your food delivery is arriving. StandBy's Siri displays results with rich visuals — easy to read and incredibly convenient. And it's easy to ask hands-free to play music or set a timer. At night while your iPhone charges, StandBy adapts to low light, taking on a beautiful red tone to support your sleep.

And for each place you charge with MagSafe, StandBy remembers your preferred view. That's StandBy. iOS 17 has even more features — you can now activate Siri just by saying "Siri." And you can issue follow-on requests without saying "Siri" again.

Maps lets you select an area and download a map to your device for offline use. And in Photos, the People album now makes it easier to find your favorite people — and even recognizes cats and dogs in your family. And that's iOS 17 — major updates to the Phone app including new Contact Posters and Live Voicemail, improvements to Messages including a new sticker experience, new ways to share with AirDrop, improvements to typing and dictation.

Along with brand-new experiences like Journal and StandBy. Now let's head downstairs to talk about iPadOS.

iPadOS powers iPad, our most versatile device, enabling users to do so much. Over the years, we've added capabilities to push the boundaries of what's possible with iPad — jotting down ideas in Notes, working across multiple apps, and spreading projects across displays.

And last month, we expanded what's possible on iPad even further, rebuilding Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro — industry-leading professional video and music production apps — from the ground up for iPad, as touch-first, all-pro experiences for the next generation of creators. The next release, iPadOS 17, advances iPad further, bringing a new level of personalization and making iPad even more capable.

Let's Start with Widgets and the Lock Screen

Let's start with widgets and the Lock Screen. Widgets are designed to deliver quick information at a glance. You can now take action directly within a widget without opening an app. Not just view a reminder — tap to mark it complete.

These quick interactions are useful in all kinds of situations. At home, you can control lights directly from the Home widget. Or start an album playing from the Music widget. And developers can add interactivity to their own widgets too. Learn something new with Quizlet flashcards, and instantly track it with Streaks.

We think interactivity with widgets will make the Home Screen even more powerful. Next, we want to bring even greater customization and personalization to another space: the Lock Screen. Our users love personalizing their iPhone Lock Screen. So we're bringing that same experience to iPad. Just tap and hold to get started.

There are so many great wallpaper options — Photo Shuffle, Weather, Emoji, and more. We've also added vibrant kaleidoscopic gem and flower wallpapers. Let me show you some wallpapers we set up. Enjoying photos on iPad's Lock Screen is so much fun. And if you select a Live Photo, advanced machine learning models are used to synthesize additional frames, creating a gorgeous, smooth slow-motion effect every time you wake your iPad.

We've also optimized wallpapers like Astronomy for iPad's larger display. Of course it's personalizable — you can now choose from the planets of our solar system, each rendered in stunning detail. Earth looks so beautiful at this size. Tap the time to adjust the font and color, change the font weight, and get it looking just right.

There's also space to add a widget here on the left. The Lock Screen is a great place to see information at a glance and take quick actions. All right — that's perfect. That's how you customize the Lock Screen in iPadOS 17. Really cool. There's one more feature making the Lock Screen even more useful: Live Activities.

You can now see your UberEats order, travel plans in Flighty, Major League Soccer scores, and timers right on the Lock Screen. And you can now track multiple timers. We really are living in amazing times. The new Lock Screen and interactive widgets on the Home Screen are a huge step toward making iPad feel more like your own.

Next, an app that's coming to iPadOS for the first time: Health. The Health app is designed to take advantage of iPad's large display, so you can see rich detail at a glance. Health data syncs securely so you can view health information from your iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, as well as compatible third-party apps and devices — all in one place.

You can easily check your activity, log your medications, and see trends and highlights. Interactive charts bring health data to life and let you dive deep into the details. For developers, HealthKit is now on iPad, opening new ways to build innovative health and fitness experiences.

Like Rise, which has built these compelling visualizations as part of their new iPad app. Next, let's look at improvements we've made to how you work with another important type of document: PDFs. Jenny will tell you all about it.

Jenny Chen: iPad is the best device for working with PDFs. They're built right into iPadOS, so they open anywhere and render beautifully.

We use PDFs for all kinds of things, and we wanted to make them even easier to work with. Thanks to new machine learning models, iPadOS can now identify fields in a PDF, so you can use AutoFill to quickly enter information like your name, address, and email from your contacts. This even works for documents scanned with your camera.

When a Signature Is Needed

When a signature is needed, you can add a saved signature or create a new one with Apple Pencil. When you're ready, you can easily reply by email with the completed form. Another place to store PDFs is the Notes app — a great way to capture almost any kind of information. This is a major upgrade, offering new ways to organize, read, annotate, and collaborate on PDFs.

PDFs fit neatly right in your notes. The note-taking canvas is still there, and the PDF expands to full width. You can quickly review the document, flip through pages, and annotate with Apple Pencil. You can store multiple PDFs in the same note — great for keeping related files together while you work.

PDFs in notes are also great for collaboration. When working together, you can see each other's updates in real time. If you write something down, that change appears on your collaborator's iPad right away. Live collaboration also works with stickers and images. You can drop an image onto a PDF and still annotate on top of it.

If you need to finish something later, you can use live collaboration from anywhere. Combine it with a FaceTime call, and it's even better. With PDFs in notes, it's all easy to mark up and annotate. Back to Craig.

Craig: That's the overview of iPadOS 17. There's of course more — improvements to Stage Manager for even more flexibility in window position and size, giving you more freedom to control your workspace.

And the ability to use the built-in camera on an external display for FaceTime and video conferencing. And Freeform gains new drawing tools — watercolor, fountain pen, and shape recognition — as well as a new Follow Along feature that lets you chase a collaborator and track their movement across the canvas.

All of this is in addition to other great features like the redesigned Lock Screen and interactive widgets, the Health app, great new ways to work with PDFs, as well as features you heard about on iOS — leaving video messages in FaceTime, inline input predictions, and updates to Messages. Now let's turn to macOS.

macOS is the heart of Mac. And with Apple silicon, the Mac lineup has never been more powerful. Combined with macOS, you can be more productive and creative than ever. With the next release, we've focused on helping you get even more done. And in deciding what to name this release, we once again turned to Apple's legendary crack product marketing team.

The brief was simple: "Travel far and wide and spare no effort." As we imagined it, the exploration involved loading up a van, typing "incredible vineyard" into Maps, and heading straight to one of the world's most famous wine regions.

Introducing macOS Sonoma. A big new release that makes your Mac more delightful and productive. First, many of the features we talked about on iOS and iPadOS are going to be great on Mac too. Like a new screensaver featuring beautiful slow-motion video from around the world — the Hong Kong skyline, sandstone buttes in Monument Valley, rolling hills in Sonoma.

And when you log in, the image beautifully settles into your desktop. Next, let me tell you about ways to make Mac more personal with widgets. Widgets are even more powerful, and there are new ones too. Let me show you a few.

But When You're Working on a Mac, You Often Want to Check Information at a Glance

But when you're working on a Mac, you often want to check information at a glance. In that case, display widgets right on the desktop. I love seeing my favorite photos and the weather forecast all day. And you can place them anywhere. Let's add Shortcuts down in the lower left.

We've also made it so widgets stay out of your way while you work, while still being easy to see. When I open Mail, the widgets instantly fade into the background so I can focus. And when you switch wallpapers, the widget background color intelligently adapts to maintain readability and harmony with the desktop.

The Photos widget adapts too. Really gorgeous. To add more widgets, you bring up the Widget Gallery. But iPhone also has great widgets, and with the magic of Continuity, you can access all of them on Mac. You can see Reddit's Apollo, HiCoffee, and even a car widget.

You don't need to install those apps on your Mac to use the widgets — your iPhone just needs to be nearby or on the same Wi-Fi network. And just like on iPad and iPhone, widgets on Mac have become interactive. You can start your car's air conditioning from the car widget using your iPhone. And interactivity opens up new workflows too.

For example, a photographer can select photos on their desktop, use a Shortcuts widget to launch Pixelmator Pro, and apply a signature look in one click to prepare for a campaign post. That's widgets for Mac — an entirely new way to personalize your desktop and get things done throughout the day.
