Ministry of Electronics soliciting industry proposals for national robotics strategy released last month

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is considering creating a special scheme including support for AI-focused semiconductor chips and datasets.

Academic and industry working groups propose development of large-scale GPU capacity for startups.

Plans also include establishing new incentive support for AI chip development.

Construction of a Large-Scale Anonymized Dataset Platform Is Also Proposed

Construction of a large-scale anonymized dataset platform is also proposed.

The ministry is also advancing a national strategy on robotics, focused on manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and national security sectors.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) may create a special program to support AI-focused semiconductor chips, datasets, and computing platforms. This is part of a multi-year plan for its technology programs.

A working group of academic and industry stakeholders appointed by the Centre for India AI proposed development of large-scale graphics processing units (GPUs) for startups. MeitY may establish new development incentive support for AI chips from the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), according to Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

Another Proposal Is for the Construction of an Anonymized Data

Another proposal is for the construction of an "India Dataset Platform" with a large, diverse collection of anonymized data required for AI model training.

Also, working group recommendations were scheduled to be published on the website on Friday, but had not yet been made public at the time of reporting.

This is, first and foremost, a deep multi-year plan to enable India to function as a connectivity enabler for promoting $1 trillion digital economy growth, and secondly, aims to deploy AI for various real-world applications including agriculture, healthcare, education, financial technology, security, and governance.

Also on Friday, industry proposals were solicited regarding the draft national robotics strategy released last month. The strategy highlights the prioritization of robotics automation in four sectors: manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and national security.

MeitY has proposed a two-phase institutional framework to facilitate implementation of the national robotics strategy, which will be implemented as a "National Robotics Mission."

Establishment of a Robotics Innovation Unit (RIU) Is Also Proposed

Establishment of a Robotics Innovation Unit (RIU) is also proposed, seeking input from the industry. This would be institutionalized as part of India AI under MeitY and would lead implementation of the national robotics strategy.

This unit may collaborate with industry, SMEs, startups, individual innovators, R&D institutions, academic institutions, and government agencies to build the robotics ecosystem.

The government is soliciting proposals on this strategy, with a deadline of October 31.

Three AI Centers of Excellence (CoEs) announced in the 2023-24 Union Budget are being built by the Ministry of Education with MeitY support, and 10 to 20 CoEs are planned to be established domestically over the coming years. Some of these will be funded by MeitY, while others will be in partnerships with private sector, academic institutions, and corporations.
