Amazon Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Imitation Books

Amazon Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Imitation Books

Authors are discovering AI-generated copies of their books on Amazon with surprise and frustration.

An individual using the pseudonym 'Steven Walryn' published 15 AI-generated books in a single day.

Prominent authors are concerned that their works are being used without permission to train AI.

The Authors' Guild and Leading

The Authors' Guild and leading authors have filed copyright infringement lawsuits against OpenAI.

As AI technology evolves, the need for robust mechanisms to protect authors' intellectual property is becoming clear.

Jane Friedman forced Amazon to remove five fake titles bearing her name, all AI-generated. The proliferation of AI-generated content on Amazon has put authors like Margaret Atwood, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Philip Pullman on high alert, as they are concerned that their works are being used to train AI language models without their consent, compensation, or credit.

Authors are discovering AI-generated copies of their books being sold on Amazon with surprise and frustration. Technology journalist Rory Cellan-Jones discovered a memoir he co-authored on Amazon under an unfamiliar cover designer. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the text had been generated by AI—specifically tools like ChatGPT—suggesting that individuals can create pages of text without writing it themselves.

While some of these AI-generated titles have been removed by Amazon, many others continue to evade filters designed to eliminate low-quality books. As an example, one individual using the pseudonym 'Steven Walryn' published 15 AI-generated books in a single day before they were eventually taken down.

In August, author Jane Friedman demanded Amazon remove five fake titles bearing her name, all AI-generated. The flood of AI-generated content on Amazon is causing concern within the literary community. In particular, prominent authors such as Margaret Atwood, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Philip Pullman are worried that their works are being used in AI training for large language models without their consent, compensation, or credit.

Amazon Claims to Be Investing

Amazon claims to be investing significant resources to enforce its guidelines and remove books that violate them. The company permits AI-generated content but draws the line at material that violates its content guidelines or provides a poor customer experience.

The situation escalated to legal action. Last month, The Authors' Guild and 17 prominent authors including Jonathan Franzen, John Grisham, George R.R. Martin, and Jodi Picoult filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the Southern District of New York. The complaint alleges that OpenAI copied their works wholesale without permission or compensation, feeding copyrighted material into large language models.

In another lawsuit, authors Michael Chabon, David Henry Hwang, Rachel Louise Snyder, and Ayelet Waldman accuse OpenAI of profiting from unauthorized and illegal use of their copyrighted content. These legal actions underscore the growing challenges surrounding AI-generated content and its impact on the publishing industry.

This situation highlights the need for robust mechanisms to protect authors' intellectual property and ensure that AI-generated content respects copyright law and ethical considerations. As AI technology continues to evolve, addressing these challenges will remain a critical issue for authors, publishers, and digital platforms like Amazon.

China-Related Transactions Export-Control Screening Sheet (fill-in / Export Control Law & Dual-Use Regulations, critical minerals, Control List, 2026)

A fill-in working sheet for companies trading with China: screen a single transaction against China's export-control regime (the Export Control Law and the Dual-Use Items Export Control Regulations), the controls on critical minerals (gallium/germanium/graphite/antimony/tungsten etc./rare earths/helium), and the four counterparty-list systems (Control List, Watch List, Unreliable Entity List, countermeasure lists). A procedure for "what to check before the deal," not a roster of "who is listed." With a plain-language intro, based on MOFCOM announcements. Listing is a regulatory category, not a judgment about any company (including the Japanese firms on the Japan-directed lists); controls change continually, so verify current announcements and consult your officer. Match counterparties using the original simplified-Chinese wording.
